7 Free Apps I Recommend for Your Blackberry Storm

Tim Searles
I purchased a Blackberry Storm through Verizon Wireless because I wasn't able to get an iPhone. I really did want an iPhone. Nevertheless I'm very happy with my Blackberry Storm. I have the AppWorld application on my phone which lets me know of various applications (some for free, some not for free) that I can download onto my phone.

Honestly, I'm not a person who'll most likely pay for an application to use on my phone. I use my phone to check email, get suggestions for various things, check my Facebook status every once in a while and respond to messages. I will admit, the best thing about my phone is having Visual VoiceMail, which is an application that allows me to listen to my voicemails through an interface! It's the best thing (for me) since sliced bread. I'm much better about listening to my messages now than I ever was.

I have some other applications that I've found that I feel just as strong about in terms of being great applications for the low low price of FREE. I recommend you download these if you have a Blackberry Storm and enjoy!

Superpages Mobile

Superpages Mobile is basically the yellow pages made as a smartphone application. You have the ability to search for people or businesses, you can search by GPS location or type in your own address, and it remembers your last locations that you looked for. To view or download this on your smartphone go to http://m.superpages.com and follow the instructions provided.

Pandora Radio

You can now listen to your favorite artists on your smartphone. With Pandora Radio you have the ability to listen to music of your favorite artists or genre. Through your smartphone you can listen in your car, at work, at home, wherever you take your phone. Also, whatever settings you create on your phone are automatically available on the web as well, so you won't have to deal with phone settings versus web settings.

For more information about Pandora Radio for your Blackberry Storm, go to http://www.pandora.com/blackberry.

Viigo

The best way I can describe Viigo is that it's a free portal for smartphones. Similar to how Yahoo has its portal, Viigo is the same way. What I like to use it for is for mainly is RSS (which stands for Really Simple Syndication) feeds. I can import these feeds from various sites and read them all in one place. That saves me a lot of time by not having to go to various sites, especially on my smartphone.

There are plenty of other things you can do with Viigo. You can get all kinds of information including weather, sports, business, finance, shopping, entertainment, and travel. You can listen to audio and view video podcasts as well; it's all-inclusive as far as portals go.

QuickPull

For those of you that have a Blackberry Storm, you know that every once in a while you need to manually reboot your phone. This is especially the case if you run a lot of applications and neglect to exit them properly, or not at all. What happens is that your phone is using up memory and eventually has a moment where it just can't take anymore then everything starts acting crazy. So what you'd have to do to fix that is take the lid off the back, take the battery out, wait a few minutes, put the battery back in, close the lid, and restart your machine... are you still doing that? Let me introduce you to the application QuickPull.

QuickPull is a "softer" way to reset your smartphone. You don't have to take the lid off, or take the battery out, just start this application and indicate you want to reboot, and your phone will go through the rebooting process. It sounds too simple, right? It is simple. And remember, it's a free application.

Poynt

With Poynt you can search movie listings and buy tickets over the phone. You can also get information about what's near the movie you want to see and plan your evening (or afternoon) accordingly. It has GPS-capability so you're not limited to the city that you reside in. Poynt is integrated with Google Maps so that you're able to get turn-by-turn directions to your destination.

Google Maps

Google Maps is Google's mapping application. With Google Maps you can find your exact location, get a street view of businesses that are around you, see real-time traffic and find the fastest routes to where you need to go, get routes to travel by subway, on foot, public transportation. I like it for it's point-to-point direction capabilities that it provides.

Blackberry comes with a mapping application - Blackberry Maps - but I still prefer Google Maps. The interface is better and makes more sense to me. If you want to use Google Maps on your Blackberry Storm, you can type http://m.google.com/maps in your phone's web browser, or type http://www.google.com/mobile/products/maps.html#p=default into your computer's web browser and have the link sent to you by filling out a short form.

YouTube

Anyone who's used YouTube is familiar about what it does. For those that aren't, in its simplest form it's a video portal. People upload their videos, whether it's of them or people they like. Businesses use it to upload marketing materials, commercials, and other business-related visuals. Artists may use it to create plugs for their art, promos for upcoming concerts, or release clips from previous work done.

You have the ability to create videos through your smartphone's video camera feature. If you had the YouTube application you'd be able to upload your video to your YouTube account. With the application you're also able to view the same videos on your phone that you would if you were on a computer. I've done this plenty of times and the quality is just as good on your phone as it would be on your computer. Of course the screen is smaller, but you're on a phone, remember?
