1. Submit your blog to search engines. This should be the first thing you do once your blog is created. Make sure you submit it to Google and Yahoo. Here are some other blog submission sites that are free to use: http://www.bloghub.com, http://www.blogcatalog.com, http://www.blogarama.com, http://www.bloggernity.com, http://www.technorati.com, and http://www.weblogalot.com.
2. Submit your blog to blog directories. Now that search engines can find you, you will want to get some links on other sites pointing back to your blog. You can do this by submitting your blog to some directories. Here are a few to get you started: http://www.topblogarea.com/add.php, http://www.myblogdirectory.net, http://www.blogtoplist.com/, and http://www.blogwise.com.
3. Ping Your Blog. Next, it is important to remember to ping your blog after each post. This lets the search engines know that you have posted fresh content. Here are a few sites you can use to ping your blog: http://www.pingomatic.com, http://www.pingoat.com, and http://www.blogrankings.com.
4. Post Comments on other blogs. See what your target niche is. Find other blogs with similar content or content that would be complimentary to your blog. Then leave comments on their blogs. Make sure your comment adds something valuable to the blog you are commenting on. In other words don't say, "Nice blog". Say something like, " I really liked how you put a fresh spin on this subject. I was able to see it from a whole new perspective." The first comment won't mean much to the author, but the second one gives the author a little more information about what you liked. When you comment on someone else's blog be sure to include a link to your blog. Search engines will pick up on these links.
5. Create a signature in you emails. Set your blog link up to appear in your all of your outgoing emails. This is good to do if you are shy about telling your family and friends to visit your blog. When they get an email from you they will be curious and click on the link creating more traffic for you.
6. Write articles. Post your blog link in the author box of your articles. There are literally thousands of free article sites you can submit your article too. Search engines also love article directories so you will be creating tons of links back to your blog.
7. Post Often. Posting often will keep your readers coming back. It will also get your readers to tell other people about your blog. If your blog is boring and only has one new post per month, your visitors may have no incentive to come back.
Following the above 7 steps may seem hard to do at first. Set yourself up a schedule and just work on it for 30 minutes each day. Soon you will start seeing the fruits of all your hard work.
