7 Great Tips and Precautions for Color Treated Hair

C.B.
Colored and treated hair needs extra special care to keep it in good condition, here's 7 tips to keep your color treated hair healthy.

-Use a leave in conditioner, to prevent your hair from fading, and to get moisture and balance in your color treated hair. When you dye your hair with permanent hair dye, it starts to take away from the nutrients in your hair. So it's basically killing your hair.

-If you dye your hair too often, it can cause your hair to become dry, brittle and loose it's shine. I recommend not dyeing it more than twice in a 6 month period.

-If you shampoo your hair roughly it can strip color or dry out hair, so shampoo gently with a shampoo specially created for colored treated hair.

-Condition regularly with an intensive color care conditioner to restore moisture, luster and shine to your color treated hair.

-Hot oil treatments are great for your hair, but can lift the color right out.

-If you dye your blonde hair to black, NEVER EVER try to bleach it to get your color back, or do an at-home stripping kit to try to get your blonde back.

I had friend who had a very very bad experience with this.. My friend once who had the most gorgeous platinum Blondie hair, decided she wanted to dye it to black. She liked it for about three days, but then realized she liked her old hair color better, and wanted it back. She called me crying about how much she hated it, so I went with her to target, and we purchased some hair bleach, and an at home stripping kit. I work in a hair salon, so I know what I'm doing. But clearly she did not want my help, whatsoever. She wanted to get the color out all by herself. I told her time after time, The results are going to be terrible. And no surprise, that they were. Your hair will turn orange.

Because the color pigments in your once light hair are now dark, and there's no way in making them as light as they were again. They'll want to stay dark, therefore the results won't be what you're looking for. Never ever mess with this, you will end up having hair as orange as the lead singer from Paramore. Drugstore products do nothing that salon products will. The only way to take care of this problem is to see what your hair care professional can do for you, or let it fade a little. *If you have natural black hair, and you dye it like a brown or red color, the at home stripping products will do a good job on your hair, because it was dark to begin with. light hair is hard to achieve again after dyeing it a dark color. But dyeing a dark color light is easier to remove. If you're trying to fade out your hair color (for example, I dyed my hair black and hated it, so I let it fade back to my natural color), the best way to do it is to use a shampoo that is color depositing (a shampoo that is not made for colored hair, one that offers no protection against hair coloring). It will gradually start to fade your hair color, by washing it out and you'll see it go down the drain when you wash it.

-If you're dyeing your hair for the first time, don't want to damage your hair, like to change your hair color every month, or don't know if you'll like the way the new color looks on you, the best option to choose is to use a temporary color hair dye. This is a great idea to get used to the color, and if you don't like it, no worries! It'll wash it out soon! These last about 28 washes. But if you have a light colored hair, and use a darker color of temporary dye, it may take a little longer to wash out. I highly recommend and loved Clairol Natural Instincts ($7). What I love about temporary hair dye is that unlike permanent hair dye, it does not contain ingredients that are harmful to your hair, or that will kill your hair.
