7 Hair-Care Hints for Hot Weather

Lisa Mason

When the hot weather sets in, it can be difficult taking care of your hair. The heat seems to wreak havoc on most any hairstyle and hair type. So how do you keep your hair looking great during the hottest part of the year? The secret is to change your hair care routine with each season. A few simple steps can help keep your hair looking great while reducing the amount of damage the heat can cause.

According to Lubbock Online, prolonged exposure to both UVA and UVB rays can damage the structure of your hair and cause it to become dry and brittle. This can cause split ends and make your hair frizzy. Wearing a hat can help but there are other options available that can help protect your hair in hot weather.

Here are some ways to help keep your hair looking beautiful this summer and on hot weather days:

  1. Stay Hydrated- When your body is hydrated, your hair will retain its natural moisture helping to reduce frizz. Drink lots of water every day to help keep your hair healthy during the summer heat.
  2. Use a Leave in Conditioner- This will help to make your hair more manageable and easier to work with when styling. Use a lightweight conditioner because the heavy ones are too much this time of year.
  3. Avoid or Limit Using Styling Tools- Hair dryers are the worse when you're dealing with hot weather but curling irons and straighteners can also be damaging. The heat dries your hair out even more making it brittle and lifeless.
  4. Use Cool Water when Washing Your Hair- This may sound a little strange but cool water will seal off your hair strands leaving them smooth and frizz-less.
  5. Use Styling Balm and/or Pomade- These products are made for this time of year and they'll work wonders for your hair in hot weather.
  6. Limit Exposure to Chlorine- Swimming in chlorinated water can be very damaging to your hair. If you swim in pools with chlorine, wash your hair immediately. Consider buying a shampoo and conditioner made just for the removal of chemicals found in swimming pools. You can also condition your hair before getting in the water to limit the amount of chlorine your hair soaks up.
  7. Use Styling Sprays that Contain Sea Salt- These products will help to increase texture and enhance your hair's natural body.

These 7 hair-care hints for hot weather can help to keep your hair looking great but sometimes the humidity is just too much. This is especially true when you're experiencing a heat wave. For these times, you may want to experiment with some carefree hairstyles and use clips or scrunches to pin your hair up for the day.
