Listen to the Music: If you listen to the music, it will guide you! Rookie dancers make the mistake of "marching to their own drum" instead of listening to the sounds coming from the speakers. Let the music take control of your body as you dance, this will not only guarantee that you stay on beat, but it will ensure that you're in full dance mode. All of your attention must be on the moves and the music and how they coordinate with each other.
Blocking out the Haters: Don't worry about what anyone says, about your dancing talent and technique. Not everyone does the same type of dancing or has the same mind state when it comes to dancing. If you worry about everyone else and their opinions of you, you will never make it to the top. The whole point of "haters" is to hate, a hater will always hate to see you succeed at anything especially if they're doing the same things. Set your mind on excelling and you will leave the rest behind!
Monitor Yourself: In order to be the best, you have to be your own judge. While the opinion of others may help from time to time, no one's opinion is as strong as your own. Try looking in the mirror as you dance to help you perfect your form. You may notice all of the mistakes you're making as you dance looking at yourself. Point out the parts where you need more practice and take it to the next level to perfect it. You should also try to videotape yourself and watching it back, it's hard to pick apart and analyze your own skills when you're dancing in the mirror at times. Just watch the tape back!
Stretch before Dancing: This is very important; you must remember to stretch before you start any type of physical activity such as dancing. Do lunges in order to work out the back and front of your legs, also try to do "toe ups" as this will help strengthen the back of your calves. Stretching before dancing will surely make your body much more flexible, which is a valued asset when it comes to dancing.
Watch the Pro's: If you inspire to be a pro, then you must watch professionals! Look at their form and footwork as you watch them. There are some performers that stick to a certain routine when it comes to improving their skills, find out their technique! Sure you won't always be able to ask them, however, if you're a dancer you should be able to pick up on dance routines and moves very quick.
Take Classes: Most of the time you can find dance classes at your local Community College or park, a lot of times their prices extremely low or free. If you feel you know a certain style of dancing, take the class that best fits the level you're on.
Be Versatile: Whatever you do, don't limit yourself to one dance style! If you specialize in salsa dancing, branch out to other styles such as hip hop, jazz, tap or ballet. You may be thinking that reaching out to all these other styles will cause you to forget your basic style however; you can simply combine everything together in one routine for an explosive performance.
