1. Hone your organizational skills.
So much of college life, and life in general, is just about organization. The more organized you are during your college years, the more you will be able to pack into them. Believe it or not, great organizational skills will help you academically as well. If you didn't pick up good organizational skills earlier in life, it is never too late to start. There are a lot of good books on the subject, as well as systems that you can purchase. In reality, you don't have to spend much, if anything, in order to become more organized.
2. Don't get lost in the academics.
It can be easy to get so wrapped up into academic pursuits that you forget that college is much more than just academics. You need to ensure that you become involved in extracurricular pursuits, and at least attempt to create a social life for yourself. College is all about balance.
3. Take advantage as many unique experiences as you can.
College is a unique time in your life in which you are expected to try many new experiences. It is a time during which you will have opportunities open to you, such as study abroad opportunities and programs such as Alternative Spring Break, and you may not get another chance to pursue such interests later in life.
4. Use your college experience as a way to study human nature.
If you grew up in a small town, your college experience may be the first time in your life that you truly get to experience the diversity that is the United States. Take advantage of it. Go out of your way to meet new, interesting people with backgrounds completely different than yours, and learn about different cultures. You might be surprised at just how handy those experiences will become later in life.
5. Remember to read just for fun.
College classes are notorious for the amount of reading assigned; however, you should still try to read material that you want to read just for pleasure. It may just provide you with a new perspective on issues that may come up in later courses. If you didn't cultivate a love of reading when you were younger, now is the time to do so. It is a hobby that will last you a lifetime.
6. Keep your nose clean.
While college is all about having fun (in addition to the academics, of course) and trying new things, there are certain things that could haunt you for the rest of your life. Drug use, excessive alcohol use, and/or promiscuous sex are all great examples. Having the common sense to know the difference between having a good time and doing something extremely dangerous will serve you well. You don't have to resort to extreme measures to have a great time.
7. Don't get lost in the party scene.
It is easier than ever to become lost in the whole college party scene. Learning how to balance your responsibilities with the need to blow off a little steam can be a fine art. Even something as apparently harmless as a part-time job can lead you down the wrong path if you begin spending all of your free time partying with your co-workers, who happen to have severe drug and alcohol issues (I personally saw this happen).
Being successful during your college years is about much more than academics or being extremely popular. Being keeping these 7 tips in mind, you won't go wrong, and will memories that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
