7 Non-Gory Horror Movies for Halloween

It can be difficult to find horror movies nowadays that are scary without being gory or violent. Even seemingly traditional ghost stories are loaded down with extreme violence and gore, and most horror films entering the cinemas are of the "more is more" school of thought when it comes to gore. Sometimes it seems like those with weak stomachs have to spend their Halloweens watching children's movies or black and white classics in order to still take place in Halloween festivities. Here are six movies for adults that are relatively non-gory, but still bring plenty of scares.

Non-Gory Halloween Movies: Rosemary's Baby (1968) Rosemary's Baby is one of those films that are heavy on spooky and unsettling atmosphere, but light on actual violence or gore. This non-gory horror film will definitely spook you this Halloween, but you won't have to worry about on-screen violence. In this case, what you don't see is much more frightening that what you do.

Non-Gory Halloween Movies: The Others (2001) There aren't many traditional ghost stories released by Hollywood these days, but occasionally one comes along. The Others is nearly devoid of gore or violence from beginning to end, but it still packs in enough scares to make it perfect for Halloween.

Non-Gory Halloween Movies: 1408 (2007) The horror movie 1408 came and went at the box office, but it definitely deserves another look. It's the type of genuinely scary, yet light and fun, horror movie that doesn't get made too often. 1408 will make you jump, but it won't have you hiding behind your fingers.

Non-Gory Halloween Movies: Drag Me to Hell (2009) Okay, I may be cheating here a little bit, as Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell has plenty of gore. The reason this movie makes the list, however, is the nature of the violence and gore in the film. It's all so over-the-top and cartoonish that even the most squeamish can tolerate it, and the Drag Me to Hell is fun and (really) scary to boot.

Non-Gory Halloween Movies: The Changeling (1980) The Changeling is one of the most compelling horror movies around, and plays on some universal human fears. It also avoids explicit violence, relying more on setting up a suspenseful atmosphere and playing up the viewer's own anxieties.

Non-Gory Halloween Movies: The Ring (2002) The American remake of The Ring has no shortage of disturbing and unsettling images, but you might be surprised to find it more or less lacking in gore and violence. The Ring is a great movie to watch if you are hosting a Halloween movie night and need something both scary and appropriate for a range of audiences.

Non-Gory Halloween Movies: The Omen (1976) The original version of The Omen is creepy and suspenseful, and is light on gore, though there is some violence. You can't go wrong with this classic horror movie for Halloween, though.
