7 Reasons Seniors Should Consider Taking a Part-Time Job

There are many benefits that seniors can reap from pursuing a part-time job after retirement in addition to extra income. Here are 7 reasons that seniors should consider taking a part-time job.

1. It will help you stay active well into old age.

If you have a job to go to every morning, or at least a few times a week, it is easier to get up and get going. It becomes easier to stay active and will help keep your mind sharp.

2. It provides a sense of purpose.

Some people feel as though they've lost their sense of purpose once they retire. Why not get it back by pursuing a part-time job that you love? You no longer have the pressure of trying to build a career, so why not choose a job that you are passionate about?

3. There is so much you can do at home.

After a couple of years of staying at home, traveling, spending time with your grandchildren, and pursuing hobbies, you might be ready for something new. If you are in your early to mid-60s, chances are that you have 20 or more years of good health ahead of you. That is a long time.

4. You can pursue a hobby or interest that you've long held, but never had the opportunity to pursue while you were working full-time.

Maybe you never got around to working for a travel agency or starting your own business. Retirement might just be the time for you to pursue the dreams you put on hold in order to further your career and raise a family.

5. Grandchildren, like your children before them, grow up and have their own lives.

When grandchildren are very young, it is natural that grandparents will want to help out a lot. Who doesn't want to spend more time with their grandkids? However, grandkids quickly grew up and go off to school in order to pursue their own dreams and ambitions. What will you do then? By taking a part-time job, you will show your grandchildren that live doesn't end at 65 or 70.

6. No one expects you to work.

At this stage in your life, no one is expecting you to work. That just might be the best reason of all in order to go ahead and do so on a part-time basis. It's a great way to show your friends and family that you are far from elderly or feeble.

7. The busier you are, the more you can accomplish.

It is often true that people who have more to do accomplish more in the long run. In other words, keep yourself busy, no matter what that may mean to you. Getting a part-time job can be just the thing to help you do that. You might actually find yourself with a renewed sense of purpose.

In addition to all of the reasons mentioned above, the work force benefits greatly from having seniors fill part-time positions. They are in a wonderful position to pass along their skills to workers who may just now be entering the workforce. Not everyone has the opportunity to grow up working alongside his or her grandparents as I did, but those who do are certainly ahead of the game, even if the older people they are working with aren't their grandparents.
