7 Reasons to Take Road Trips with Your Kids

Are you dreading taking road trips with your kids? Here are 7 reasons you should plan on it.

1. It isn't always easy or affordable to travel to certain locations by airplane.

If you aren't planning on going all the way across the country, it might be much more economical to simply drive. If you always fly, you might be missing out on some great sights in your own state or region.

2. You can have older kids help plan the entire trip, from packing to mapping the entire route.

For older kids, road trips can be a great lesson in planning and map reading. Let your kids help plan the route, the stops, the food, and just about everything else. The next time you take a trip, whether by road or air, your kids will be prepared.

When you fly, you are pretty much locked into your destination. However, when you take a road trip with your kids, it is much easier to make adjustments for unforeseen problems, last-minute changes, and more. If you want flexibility, take a road trip.

5. You won't have to worry about flight times, luggage restrictions, and the hassles of flying.

Air travel is far from a picnic, especially with kids. When you travel by car, you can stop to let your kids stretch their legs, play around, etc. You certainly can't do that on a flight. In addition, while you will be confined to what your vehicle can carry, you won't to worry about what you bring. The new carry-on luggage restrictions can really be tricky to follow exactly. You can avoid the entire hassle of flying by simply taking the car instead.

6. Taking a road trip can help your kids learn about their country.

When you fly, you have no sense of the country between you and your destination. However, kids can learn a lot about the geography of their country when their parents take them on a road trip. For example, it is one thing to learn about the Rocky Mountains and quite another to travel the road to Pike's Peak.

7. It is fun to stop often at tourist traps.

If you are traveling on a road trip with kids, they may come across to a roadside attraction that will pique their interest, such as the Call of the Wild Museum in Gaylord, Michigan. You can often use these unplanned stops in order to keep your kids in a good mood. It is always a good idea to break up long trips in order to prevent road fatigue.
