7 Reasons to Volunteer at an Animal Shelter

Jenne Joy

There are hundreds of places to volunteer at: schools, city parks, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, women's shelters, nursing homes and of course, animal shelters. While volunteering at any one of these places is a rewarding experience, there are plenty of reasons to volunteer at a cat shelter. Here are 10 reasons why you should choose to volunteer at your local cat shelter.

Career

Many companies look highly on those who do volunteer work. It shows their workers are connected to the community and are there to stay. When you forge a bond with the community, your boss notices. Furthermore, volunteering shows that you can work well with others to achieve a common goal and for your boss, knowing your a team player makes you a valuable asset to the company.

New Skills

When volunteering, you may discover new skills you never knew you had. You may learn new skills that benefit you in other areas of your life. You might even learn that you have a talent for soothing an angry feline or you have the commanding skills necessary for teaching dogs basic commands such as 'sit' or 'stay.'

You're an Animal Lover

If you're like me, you love animals. You may even wish you could adopt every animal in need as you saw fit. If you're like me, that's just not a feasible option. However, working at animal shelter can be just as rewarding as saving every cat or dog you come across.

Connections

As a volunteer, you'll meet influential people in your community, develop friendships with other volunteers and you'll meet new people constantly. This is especially true if your chosen organization attends local events or hosts their events, such as adoption events. If you're a people person, you'll enjoy your time volunteering simply for the people.

You'll Feel Good About Yourself

No explanation needed here, really.

Giving Back to the Community

Volunteering is about giving. It shows you care about your community, (remember that note about connecting with your community?) In an animal shelter, simply giving love and affection to a dog or cat makes that animal happier and more comfortable. This translates into a pet that is more content and therefore more adoptable. Adoptable animals are key in an animal shelter, and an adoptable animal makes a deserving family happy. It all boils down to the community.

You Have Passion

If you find yourself volunteering, it's a true sign of passion. You're passionate about something so much so that you're doing it for free, and you're okay with that. In other words, you're a good person and you may not even have realized it. Besides, nothing is more gratifying than a room full of purring cats who are grateful just to have someone come pet them, give them fresh bowls of water and clean beds to sleep in.
