7 of the Shortest Video Games Ever Released

Jennifer Amlie
With online multiplayer being included in video games, the main campaigns are often shorter. Even video games with no online content seem to be shrinking. If players aren't interested in online competition or want a longer experience, they may feel cheated after spending $60.00 on a game that lasts 5 hours. Here are a few really short video games that have been released.

Heavenly Sword (PS3)
At about 6 hours to complete, Heavenly Sword is very short. While the combos are exciting and varied, the enemies aren't. Therefore, the regular combat starts to feel repetitive even in such a short game. The graphics are amazing and the story is compelling. If you don't have much time to play a game, this one is a fun choice.

Portal (Xbox360, PS3, PC)
Portal was released as part of the Orange Box. The disc also includes Team Fortress 2 and Half Life 2. Gamers quickly praised the short video game for its unique sense of humor, interesting puzzles, and story. While the game is one of the shortest at about 4 hours, Portal is an instant classic every gamer should play.

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare (Wii, PC, Xbox 360, PS3)
The single player campaign is over before players knew it. It takes about 4 or 5 hours to finish. The game was praised for the intensity of its single player, but criticized for being very short. The main attraction of the game seemed to be the different multiplayer modes. At least with a great multiplayer experience, the game has replay value.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, DS, PC)
Modern Warfare 2 has an extremely short campaign at about 5 hours. Just like in COD4, the length of the main game doesn't seem to bother players who are interested in its large and complex multiplayer system. The multiplayer alone is worth $60.00. The single player campaign would have been better if it was a bit more compelling. Instead, it feels like a tacked on addition to the online play.

Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 (Xbox 360)
Both of these games have 4 levels in their campaigns. Each level can be completed in about 45 minutes, making them very short games. The great thing about L4D is the game is never the same twice. The Tanks and Witches aren't in the same places over and over again. Both also have great multiplayer elements with an assortment of modes. While they are short games, it takes awhile to get bored of them.

Killzone 2 (PS3)
This shorter game has a single player campaign of about 8 hours. Even though it doesn't last too long, the gameplay is engaging. The graphics are amazing and it's a fun experience. Multiplayer is features some great maps too. The shallow story could have been more fleshed out, though. Killzone 2 is a short game with plenty of multiplayer replay value.

I still have fond memories of renting The Little Mermaid game for NES and beating it in 45 minutes as a kid.

Let me add two to your list: Metroid and Bionic Commando. The designers actually reward you for completing the first in less than 2 hours and the second I have completed in 2 hours. And in response to an earlier comment, some short games rock. The two I listed are two of the best games ever released.

I was extremely disappointed in COD4 because the boyfriend bought it and I was fully expecting a few days of peace while he was trying to beat his new game. Way wrong! He came prancing back in 7 hours later and I was not impressed!

Shorter games involve you less. They would be fun for the younger set to trade around.

Good reviews. So many of these games are so similar though - just killing games...
