7 Simple Steps for Creating a Sleek Ponytail like Kim Kardashian

Celebrity Hairstyling Made Easy for Medium to Long Hair

Linda Ann Nickerson
Once upon a time, women tucked their tresses into rubber bands and hair ties, creating simple ponytails for casual convenience. No more.

The basic ponytail has evolved into high fashion, with fashionistas sporting the sleekest styles. For example, 30-year-old socialite, fashion model and reality television personality Kim Kardashian has appeared at celebrity award events, such as the Teen Choice Awards, with her own sleek ponytail.

How can women create celebrity sleek ponytails?

The classic sleek ponytail is not difficult, but seven basic steps are generally required. Of course, medium to long hair is needed for a sleek ponytail hairstyle. Women who do not possess Rapunzel-length hair can add hair extensions.

Here's a step-by-step guide to creating the sleek ponytail.

1. First, shampoo and condition the hair.

Shiny, clean hair is a prerequisite for the sleekest ponytail. After shampooing, add conditioner, using a wide-toothed comb to work the product down to the more fragile ends. Rinse thoroughly.

2. Towel-dry freshly cleaned hair.

Gently blot hair with a soft towel until it is barely damp.

3. Add a leave-in conditioning crème or hair mousse.

Squirt a dollop of leave-in conditioner or mousse into one hand, and work the product through the hair.

4. Blow dry hair, and straighten with a hot flat iron for the sleekest ponytail.

Dry the hair with an electric blow dryer, and use a hot flat iron to create the longest, straightest strands possible.

5. Secure hair in a high ponytail position with a covered, elastic band.

Pull the hair back and up into a high, tight ponytail, fastening it in a no-tear, elastic hair band. The sleek ponytail should fall from the top of the back of the head, not the crown.

6. Smooth the sleek ponytail with hair gel or hair serum.

Sparingly add a bit of hair gel or hair serum to seal in shine and eliminate frizz. Do not use hairspray, as this will destroy the softness and flatten the sleek ponytail.

7. Accessorize the sleek ponytail for added glamor and hold.

High-fashion sleek ponytails may be dressed up with bows, jeweled clips, hairpins or flowers. Some women wear wide headbands to keep shorter hairs tucked into sleek ponytails.

The sleek ponytail draws hair away from the face and neck in an elegant fashion, highlighting a woman's own features. As a result, a woman's eyes become the showcase of the face, so tasteful makeup completes the glamorous look.

Who is sporting the sleek ponytail?

The classic sleek ponytail has been spotted on the most glamorous celebrity women (of all ages and ethnic backgrounds), including Christina Aguilera, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale, Halle Berry, Beyonce, Kristen Cavallari, Lauren Conrad, Miley Cyrus, Portia de Rossi, Carmen Electra, Anne Hathaway, Amber Heard, Katherine Heigl, Angelina Jolie, Catherine Zeta Jones, Ashley Judd, Miranda Kerr, Alicia Keys, Nicole Kidman, Heidi Klum, Ali Larter, Jennifer Lopez, Maria Menounos, Zoe Saldana, Jane Seymour, Jessica Simpson, Ashley Tisdale, Carrie Underwood, Gretchen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Zhang Ziyi and more.

From red carpets to daily runs, pretty ponytails add pizazz and practicality to long-haired women's looks.

Well written article! I certainly don't have a problem with getting the straightness. My hair is so naturally straight it doesn't hold curls!
