The beginning of a new school year is always a mixed bag of emotions - for kids and parents. One thing parents have in common, we all want our kids to succeed in school, both academically and socially. These seven steps to a great school year will get your kid (and you) off to a smart school start.
Get Your Kid Psyched About School
Talk about all the positive experiences your kid will have in school, like meeting the nice teacher, seeing friends again and taking fun field trips. Remember kids are listening when you're talking to other people, so when the conversation comes around to school topics, keep it upbeat and positive.
Phase in an Earlier Bedtime
Kids need about 10 hours of sleep per night to function at their best, but they've been on 'summer time' for weeks, going to bed late, sleeping late, now it's time to phase in an earlier bedtime. Begin one week before school starts by changing the child's evening routine. Have the child stay indoors after dinner and become engaged in slower-paced family activities like board games and reading so the child's body can wind down earlier. Then start putting the child to bed 30 minutes earlier every other night until you have reached the ideal bedtime.
Get Organized
Organization leads to success, so get yourself and your child organized. Develop a routine for mornings and after school so there will be no mad dash to get out the door in the morning (which often leads to forgetting something) and no messes after school with books and coats tossed everywhere and homework forgotten about.
Plan Study Time
Kids need a little time (about 30 minutes) right after school to grab a snack and expend some pent-up energy, so allow them a few minutes to play with friends, then get them settled in to do homework. Plan a reward to give to your kid for when the homework is completed to motivate the child.
Plan Daily One-On-One Time With Your Child
Set aside a special time each day, just a 15-20 block of time is all that's needed, for one-on-one time with your child and is invaluable to keep you connected. Make it a fun time by setting in a special chair and eating a snack together.
Don't Do Their Homework
However tempting it may be, don't do your kid's homework. If you explain how to solve every problem, your kid won't develop the proper self-esteem and learn how to problem-solve for themself. Be encouraging, tell the child he/she can do it, but don't do it for them.
Communicate With Teachers
Parents and teachers are on the same team; both want the child to receive a good education. Communicate with teachers regarding what your working on at home with kids (like practicing writing skills) and let the teacher know if you are open to volunteering at school if needed.
