1. Lift heavy - This is perhaps the most important secret for building muscle. When you perform heavy compound exercises like squats, dead-lifts, power cleans, military presses, pull-ups exc. you are causing your body to go under a lot of stress. This is the key to building muscle because your body has to adapt. So while you are doing these exercises especially, lift heavy (and smart - use good form!).
2. Dedication and motivation - These two factors work synergistically to allow you to achieve great goals in and out of the gym. If you are expecting results, then go to the gym with a plan and goal. Stop at nothing to lift 5lb more than you did last week. It is important to be self-motivated while working out.
3. Eat lots of protein - Incorporate foods like eggs, chicken, turkey, beef, fish, cottage cheese, nuts, whey exc. If you expect to build muscle, then you must feed your muscle the foods that it needs.
4. Be active - Walk a lot throughout the day and don't forget to stretch! Walking will burn a lot of fat while retaining muscle, and stretching will assist in muscle growth and injury prevention.
5. Swim - Swimming helps to build many stabilizer muscles that you may not get a chance to work out in the gym. Not only this, but swimming is a great form of cardiovascular exercise. Remember, your heart is a muscle too!
6. Yoga - Yoga is great because it helps you to build muscle and become more flexible. You want to make sure that you aren't out of the gym for weeks because you neglected effective prevention. Also, if you have any pains that burden you, try yoga. It might help !
7. Rest - Make sure that you rest! We grow while we are asleep, not while we are awake! So make sure that you are resting enough to allow your muscles to heal.
These tips should get you started on a path to success when it comes to building muscle naturally. If you take these with you to the gym, then you will see success in the future. Happy lifting!
