7 Tips to Help You Fall Asleep Fast

"I have never been too concerned with sleep or lack of it, the blessed never are!" --The Aging Optimist

A common complaint for those of us who are "getting on" is either broken sleep, or no sleep. The fact of the matter is, that sleep shortens as we get older. There are lots of theories about this, but I find them all quite boring. Who cares? If you can't sleep, you can't sleep.

Over the years I have read or heard about the following tips to help the sleep-deprived.

1) Establish a routine. Most people in our time of life have already worked this out. I don't know why, maybe because it is a great way to stay healthy? Healthy people usually tend to get to be our age, right?

2) Take a long, luxurious bath. That would be great, but since my home generally resembles Grand Central Station, or I am in the middle of a piece of work (or play) that I just don't want to put down, a "long, luxurious bath" is not on my schedule.

3) Make love. Did I hear someone laughing?

4) Your bedroom should not have any other purposes, sleep and making love are its only functions. That's ok for those who don't have grandchildren, do their laundry on a regular basis, or have a very large bookcase. My bedroom can be used for all of these functions at any one time.

5) Have a restful cup of tea before bedtime. I tried this once. Later, after an entire night of tossing and turning I read the box and found that it had more caffeine in it than my morning cup of Joe.

6) Make your mind a blank slate. Picture a big white board or a sign that reads Stop! This one has always made me erupt into giggles. The first time I heard about it I was attending a women's retreat and had just joined a group of women at lunch. I had joined them in the middle of their conversation and all I heard was Stop -mind- sign-- and white mind. Later that evening, I tried to blank my mind. After thinking about the conversation at the dinner table, I had the best night of sleep I had had in a year.

7) If these problems persist seek the service of a sleep disorder clinic. I don't know about you but just knowing that I am being YouTubed while trying to sleep keeps me awake.

I think all of these can really work at one time or another in life. Sleep is an illusive friend. Sometimes, there when you need it. Sometimes, giving no answer to your call. And sometimes not there at all. In the end of it though, you put up with the fair-weathered nature of it, because it is so good when it's good.

I know the old counting sheep trick sounds really funny, but i close my eyes and count backwards from 100 AND it makes my eyes as well as my brain restless and i usually dont make it past 55 before i fall asleep!

another good way to fall asleep fast is to listen to something relizing for about 10minutes before bed and during bed this helped me alot before my stereo was broken.

A failproof technique (for me) to jump into dreamland is to set the same DVD on every night. I use the old Batman movie (you know, the WIZZ! BANG! THOMP! kind of Batman). A week into the routine, and I'm out like a light.

Big J What you describe is wise. Meditation works on the same technique. Both are proven and work.

I used to have problems going to sleep since I usually couldn't keep my brain from running off on random thoughts. I definitely agree with clearly your mind but the thing is you must focus on something so not to keep them from coming back. I kinda learn a type of hypnosis trick myself. Basically you imagine a darkness. Just a black void of nothing and focus on how it is nothing . While focusing on the black nothingness, control your breathing. You want to slow down your breathing into a slower rythmic state. Be constant and dont give up. After doing those two things, you will fall asleep.
