Pick your destination. Always head out on your trip with a specific destination in mind. If you want to stop in more than one place, be sure to know exactly where you want to stop and how long you want to stay there.
Decide on the length of your trip. Once you have chosen your destination and any other stops you want to make, you can evaluate how long your trip will need to be. Be cautious that you don't overestimate or underestimate the amount of time you will need to be in one place. You will only add stress to your trip if you are stuck somewhere with too much time on your hands or you end up not having enough time to do all the things you want to.
Plan your route. Use an online mapping system to plot the route you will be taking (if you are going by car). It is always a good idea to check with highway departments to make sure that none of the roads you are going to be on are closed and that they don't have any major construction going on that will cause delays.
Choose your lodgings. Book hotels or other accommodations as far in advance as possible to ensure that you get the rooms you want at the best price possible. You don't want to arrive at your destination without a reservation because you will end up paying more for a room that will very likely not be as nice.
Decide what attractions you want to see. Visit as few or as many local attractions as you like, just be sure to plan which ones you want to see in advance. Check online to see what their hours of operation are and the cost of tickets. You should also see if there are any discounts available. If you are positive it is something you are going to see and it is possible to purchase tickets ahead of time, you should do so.
Make a checklist. Know what items you need to take with you and prepare a checklist with everything on it. Put down anything you might need from prescriptions to sunscreen to swimsuits and double check it before you leave the house. This is the perfect way to ensure that nothing is forgotten.
The one preparation that I feel is absolutely the most important is to print a copy of everything! If you have booked reservations of any kind online, this is a breeze. Put together a folder with printouts of all hotel reservation confirmations, maps to your destinations, any tickets you may have purchased, operating information on the attractions you are visiting and anything else that you might need for documentation purposes. These are things that are all readily available online for your convenience.
By taking these preparation steps you will find that things will go much more smoothly once you reach your destination and you can enjoy the trip you have always dreamed about.
