7 TV Shows in New York, and Where to Find Them

Sabrina Ricci
Los Angeles may be known for its movies and TV shows, but New York City has its fair share of filmings and star sightings. Seven shows currently on-air regularly film on location in the five boroughs. Here's a list of the shows and you might stumble upon them.

30 Rock

A comedy show about Liz Lemon's experience as a head writer for an NBC show, 30 Rock is primarily filmed in Silvercup Studios in Long Island City, Queens, New York.

Boardwalk Empire

Alcohol and Prohibition, how much more conflict can you ask for in a show? Although the show is set in Atlantic City, New Jersey, it is filmed primarily in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York. Interior scenes were shot in Manhattanville College, which is located in Purchase, New York. It took three months to build the main set, which looks like the 1920s version of the Boardwalk. For more information on what the Boardwalk is like today, check out my article, "Day Trip to Atlantic City, NJ."

Bored to Death

Another show filmed and primarily set in Brooklyn, Bored to Death is about a Brooklyn writer who does PI work on the side. Filming has occurred on Smith Street, Bond Street, President Street, and 3rd Street. As a side note, the show was written by Jonathan Ames, the name of the main character, who used to be a NY Press columnist.

Damages

A drama series about a lawyer and her law firm, Damages started off its third season filming in Great Kills on Staten Island, New York, specifically the neighborhood South Shore. In past years, the show has been filmed on Wall Street.

The Good Wife

The Good Wife is a legal drama about a woman who goes back to work as a litigator after her husband goes to jail. The show often films on location in various parts of New York, and as recently as December 9 the crew was spotted filming in Manhattan. They set-up around 84-86th Street and Central Park West/Columbus Avenue. And, on December 16, they shot around 8th Avenue and 42nd Street.

Gossip Girl

A teen drama series, Gossip Girl focuses on the lives of Manhattan's young elite. The show shoots at Silvercup Studios, but is also often filmed on location throughout New York City. Some previous filming sites have included The Packer Collegiate Institute, The Front Room, Henri Bendel, and The Foundry.

Law and Order: SVU

A spin-off of Law and Order, SVU is a show about the special victims unit and has been an ongoing series since 1999. The show is set in New York City, and they do shoot on location. On July 17, they filmed the show at Grand Central Station.

Obviously, a lot of these shows are filmed in studios. For the most up-to-date information on where and when you can find shootings in the city, check out OnLocationVacations.com.
