Greet Everyone: While most people tend to only speak to others they know, it is considered rude in Amsterdam to not speak to people when walking into a public establishment. When you go into places such as stores and coffee shops, great everyone with a hello or smile, they will love you for it!
Pick Pocket Alert: While Amsterdam is considered a "freedom paradise", it still has its downfalls when it comes to crime as any other place. No the crimes aren't violence related, it's theft! Pick pockets are the number one problem when it comes to crime in Amsterdam. Keep your wallet or purse on you at all times and constantly double check your items after walking by suspicious people or large crowds. If you plan on using a ATM, either watch your back or have someone with you in case a situation occurs.
Don't Pee on the Streets: This mostly goes for men; however it can go for women as well if they wish to engage in urinating in the street. This is a popular trend for naive tourists who get to drunk, it's not only considered rude and unsanitary, it will also get you a fine of 40 Euro.
No Drinking on the Street: It is considered ILLEGAL to drink on the streets in Amsterdam. With that being said, keep your alcohol in doors at all times. Not only will the police physically pour out your alcohol in front of you, you will receive a huge fine!
Don't "Foot It" in Bike Lanes: If you're thinking of taking a stroll in the bike lane, think again! Never walk in the bike lanes as the bike riders won't stop for you. This is serious business, don't be a victim of this by not taking it serious. When you hear their bike bells to signal you to move out of the way, take head!
Watch Out for Fake Cops: The Amsterdam locals are used to taking advantage of uneducated tourist by faking like they are cops. Don't be a victim of this scam, if you're confronted by the police; ask to see their official police badge. Remember that this COULD happen, however; if you are confronted by real police play it safe and follow their instructions.
No Flashes in Red Light District: If you're thinking a taking a tour down the most talked about Red Light District, don't take pictures. This will not only cause the women to scream and shout at you, but it may draw unwanted police attention that you don't need. If you are thinking of taking a few pictures and being able to get away with it, be smart and make sure the flash feature is off!
Watch the Parking Meter: If you plan on parking and using the parking meter, make sure you insert enough money into the meter so that your time doesn't expire. They make a big deal out of this if your parking meter expires, not only will you receive a huge fine, you could possibly face other legal troubles if you protest it.
