Leanne Brewer
The very first skateboard was invented in the early 1950's. Of course, back then, they didn't look like the skateboards we have today. The first skateboards were shaped and built like a scooter. In 1959, the first Modern Derby skateboard was built and looks similiar to the models we have in 2010. The '60's came around and the skateboarding companies witnessed their very first sales slump. Years later, they got back on their feet and became more popular than ever. Now there are hundreds and hundreds of skateboarding brands, shops, and parks all around the world. But the parks are what seem to catch a lot of attention. A little boy would see a man thrashing the skatepark ramps and have the urge to discovrt that feeling and become a part of it. The parks are the main source of a skater.

Skateboarding in many California parks is prohibited (along with skating). I thought it much better if a child skates or 'boards' in a park than on streets. My city, Long Beach, now has movable skate parks, that make the rounds of local parks. They have also built some permanent skate parks in a few of them. I love watching the kids when I visit one of our parks with a skate park ~ even the temp ones.
