8 Creative Ways to Decorate for Fall Using Vintage Finds

M. Hall
Using vintage items to decorate for fall is a creative and inexpensive way to decorate for the fall months. I always enjoy driving by farms and seeing what they have on display because they have so much to work with! But even if you do not live on a farm, you can still find vintage items cheaply throughout the year at yard sales, estate sales and flea markets. Maybe you have inherited some of these items and never thought to use them in decorating. Here are some great ways to decorate your porch and yard the vintage way!

1. Find an old, rusty wheelbarrow. Park in your yard and fill it full of pumpkins or gourds, mums or a straw bale. You can arrange some in the wheelbarrow and set others around the base of it. Use your imagination and rearrange everything until it looks right to you. Trust me, you will get compliments on this charming display.

2. Hang vintage rakes, hoes and other gardening tools from the wall of your porch (or shed). Again, don't worry about the rust. The rustier, the better. Take small pumpkins and prop them on the tools. If you have corn stalks available to you, use them in this display as well.

3. Vintage garden gates can be used as a backdrop for mums, pumpkins, gourds and small garden tools. Old fencing can be used to enclose a scary graveyard!

4. Old wooden benches are the perfect spot to place a row of pumpkins of all shapes, colors and sizes.

5. Grandpa's old pair of overalls and flannel shirt looks awesome on a homemade scarecrow. Simply stuff the clothes full of straw and secure as needed with old twine or string.

6. Old metal buckets with bright mums tucked inside makes a simple, but stunning display.

7. Vintage wood barrels can be used to store your colorful leaves and include them in any of the above displays. You could also lay them on their side so that the leaves fall out a little, showing off their beautiful fall hues.

8. Don't forget the big garden implements such as vintage tillers, plows, garden carts, wheels and even tractors. These will create a lasting impression on whoever sees them.

I was lucky enough to inherit my grandpa's old tools and gardening implements when he passed away. Every time that I use them to decorate my yard and porch, I think that he would probably be happy that they are being put to good use. Using his things makes me feel close to him even though he is gone. Vintage items have such a history and it is a lot of fun to be creative when deciding how you want your fall display to look. Use your imagination. Look at the item and decide how it can be used as a point of interest in your outdoor decorating project. Be flexible and change things around until it looks just right. But most of all, have fun!
