8 Eco-Friendly Ideas We Can Borrow from College Students

Great Easy Ways to Save Money and Help the Environment

Judy Liu
For many, college is the first time these young adults are on their own. If they have not already done so, they quickly learn how expensive everything is and are able to adapt and find ways to live rather frugally. Here are eight great eco-friendly ideas we can borrow from college students.

1. Clothes can be worn more than once before they are washed.
College students realize that washing a load of laundry adds up to quite a bit of cash so they learn that unless they did a major workout at the gym, they can usually wear their clothes again before they do a load of laundry.

2. Carpool and hitch a ride with friends.
Most college students who live on campus do not have a car. Therefore, they learn to befriend others who do have a car and learn to carpool.

3. Consignment and thrift shops offer great deals.
Not able to afford the latest fashion? Not a problem. Rummage their local consignment and thrift shops to buy designer labels at major discounts.

4. Eat like a vegetarian.
Rice, beans, lettuce, tomatoes and potatoes are just a few staple items that are nutritional and healthy. Most college students discover their passion for human treatment of animals and have attempted to eat a vegetarian diet. Eating like a vegetarian is great for the environment and gentle on the wallet.

5. Swap textbooks.
Freshmen college students quickly learn that they can easily swap/borrow textbooks from fellow students who have taken courses before them.

6. Watch shows or television in a group.
The average American household has two televisions. College students huddle together in groups to have show nights (saves money on electricity and makes for great bonding moments).

7. Do It Yourself Beauty / Grooming.
To save money, male college students help each other out by giving each other hair cuts. Female college students have hair dyeing sessions, experimenting with different coloring techniques with friends. To save money, they also meet together to give each other manicures and pedicures. Fun, relaxing and inexpensive.

8. Lose the landlines.
Most college students do not have traditional landlines. Instead, they depend on their computer internet connection and cellphones to stay connected to the world.

I live in a 3-college/university town and find that I can benefit from a great deal of their "throwaway" mentality - clothing, computers, furniture - even a canoe! But I do like the way you looked "at the glass" differently.
