8 Effective Ways to Clean Upholstered Furniture

Many of the products we will discuss are common everyday products whose original use has nothing to do with upholstery cleaning. Some are homemade formulas. We will also talk about some products that are for upholstery cleaning that work very well but are very inexpensive. After reading this article, you should be able to find a product that works for you.

Everyday Products

Baby wipes are the first product we will introduce as a good upholstery cleaner. Baby wipes are very mild and not too wet. They are good for getting stains out of upholstered furniture and for cleaning the whole sofa or chair.

Dryel dry cleaning cloths are good for a custom sofa or chair that can only be dry cleaned. It is said to be easy and leaves a fresh smell to the furniture.

Mr. Clean was suggested by a woman who wrote in on a website. She uses it full strength from a spray bottle and rubs it in and then wipes it off. She prefers the blue fragrance because she likes it best.

Mean Green (don't confuse with Simple Green) can be purchased at most dollar stores. It can be put into a carpet and upholstery cleaner. Use half the amount of Mean Green that the directions read for upholstery cleaning. Spot test the solution in an inconspicuous part of the furniture. Apply with the upholstery cleaner and wipe off with a dry, white cloth.

White vinegar can be used by wetting a rag and wringing it out completely so that it's not dripping. Then wipe the furniture down. The smell is not pleasant, but after awhile it leaves the furniture smelling fresh. This removes surface dirt so if you need deep cleaning, this may not work. You will be surprised by the amount of dirt you remove from your furniture!

Here is a homemade mixture that works well. Mix 6 tablespoons of soap flakes, 1 pint of boiling water and 2 tablespoons of Borax. Mix everything together until it cools to a gel. Beat the gel into foam. Use a rough cloth or upholstery brush to apply to the fabric without soaking it. Wipe the dirty suds away with a damp cloth.

Upholstery cleaning products

Woolite foam upholstery cleaner works well as directed. You can also whip Woolite liquid soap or a mild dish soup with water added until it is foamy. Spread the whipped foam on the furniture and let dry. Vacuum the furniture and then wipe with a wet cloth that is dipped in diluted vinegar to remove any residue.

OxyClean is another product suggestion for cleaning a custom chair or sofa. Mix it according to the directions and spread it all over the furniture. Your furniture will be almost as good as new.
