8 Questions You Must Ask Yourself Before You Begin a Weight Loss Program
Complete This Checklist to Determine Your Readiness
1. Are you willing to make long-term, lasting life style changes - including eating healthy and exercising more? Knowing that you need to make these changes and being willing to make them long term are two different things. To be successful, you need to wholeheartedly embrace long term, (sometimes drastic) changes.
2. Are you willing to first work through any of the following distractions: relationship problems, job stress, distractions or illness? Allow these issues to settle before you start your weight loss program. You'll need focused attention and energy to be successful, and you probably won't have that until you work through any outstanding distractions and issues.
3. Do you have a realistic weight loss goal, (as well as plans for healthy eating and exercise) in place? Before you start with any weight loss program, you need to have a clear picture of a healthy weight loss goal, along with workable, well-defined plans for diet and exercise. Just hoping or wondering aimlessly toward loosely-defined goals is not setting yourself up for success.
4. Do you have a support system in place? You'll need close confidants, family, friends, or a support group and resources on which to lean, bounce ideas off of, and go to for support. Make sure you have a dependable team in place before you get started.
5. Are you willing to analyze past success and failures and make any adjustments needed this time around? Past weight loss problems and failures can provide vital information to help you succeed this time. You need to be willing to honestly evaluate what has gone wrong in the past and make any necessary (and sometimes difficult) changes.
6. Are you willing to keep accurate, careful records of your food intake, exercise completed, progress and/or bumps in the road? Most of us often underestimate how much we are eating and overestimate how much we exercise. You'll need to be committed to keeping HONEST accurate records so you can identify where you're succeeding and where you need to improve.
7. Have you worked through any and all emotional or food issues that might keep you from your weight goals? If you're an emotional eater, or use food as a fix, you'll need to find other coping mechanisms to be successful. Until you do, any associations between food and comfort or coping will likely thwart or hinder your weight loss success.
8. Are You In This For The Long Haul? Achieving a healthy lifestyle and succeeding in a long-term weight loss program is a life - long process. It is essentially a lifetime lifestyle change. Those who are successful have committed to lasting changes rather than quick fixes.
If you honestly answered yes to all of these questions, you're more than ready for long - term weight loss success and a healthy life style change. If you weren't sure about a question, or answered no, you may just need to intensely focus on the subject matter and make any necessary changes before you're ready to move on to weight loss - and that's perfectly OK. It's important that you honestly evaluate where you are so that when you do embark on a weight loss program, it will be a successful one that you can stick to and thrive with for the long term.
