8 Reasons Homeschooling May Be Right for Your Family

Why Some Parents Choose Homeschooling

Rebecca Livermore
While some people say that homeschooling is the only way to go, homeschooling is not for everyone. However, there are many good reasons to homeschool. Here are some of the most common reasons parents choose to homeschool.

1. Parents choose to homeschool for religious or philosophical reasons. Some people chose to homeschool because they are unhappy with the values presented in the public school setting. They may also want to have more time to teach their children about their religion and homeschooling provides them with more time to do so.

2. Parents choose to homeschool for academic reasons. Although many people would argue that homeschooling parents are not equipped to teach their children, research on the subject proves otherwise. Individual attention in homeschooling often provides a superior educational environment compared with what can be offered in large classrooms.

3. Parents choose to homeschool for health reasons. At times, children have health issues that may make it difficult or impossible for them to attend a public or private school. If a child has an illness that requires ongoing treatment which would result in missing a lot of school, parents may opt to homeschool. Parents of children who do not have a serious illness and yet are sickly and would miss a lot of school due to basic illnesses such as colds and coughs may also decide to homeschool to protect their child from picking up sicknesses from other children.

4. Parents choose to homeschool for financial reasons. While there is some cost associated with homeschooling, there is also cost associated with attending even public schools including the purchase of mandatory school supplies, new school clothes at the beginning of the year, school parties and other activities. And of course the costs of private schools are out of reach of most American families. Homeschooling parents have a great deal of control over how much they spend on homeschooling, and they also can choose when and how to spend the money.

5. Parents choose to homeschool in order to accommodate their children's learning style. Not all children learn well through textbooks. Some children need to get up and move around while learning and do better with a hands on approach to education. Many public and private school teachers attempt to incorporate hands on learning opportunities, but it is difficult to do that consistently with a large group of children.

6. Parents choose to homeschool in order to accommodate their children's level of intelligence. Some children who are homeschooled are geniuses and others are slow learners and of course many are just average. Either way, the individual nature of homeschooling allows the pace of the education to be suited to the particular student. Many homeschooled students are well ahead in some subjects, right where they "should" be in others, and a bit behind in still others.

7. Parents choose to homeschool for the purpose of flexible schedules. For example, if the father works swing shift and would therefore not see his children very often if they were in school, a family may decide to homeschool so the children can have more time with their father. Such a family may choose to make breakfast, when the father is home, the family meal of the day and not start school until 10:00 a.m.

8. Parents may choose to homeschool because they value strong family relationships. Homeschooling provides parents more time with their children and siblings more time together. Although homeschooling siblings may fight and argue with each other like other children, they also often become best friends. Homeschooling can create a great sense of unity in a family.

Each family must choose which educational option is right for them. The above list may help you decide whether or not homeschooling is right for you and also may help you to understand why your neighbor or family member has made the decision to homeschool even if you personally feel homeschooling is not right for your family.

Great list of questions for those weighing the pros and cons of homeschooling. I'm not homeschooling, but the flexible schedule is most appealing to our family. Besides our weird day-to-day schedules, it would really be great to travel whenever we wanted and turn those trips into learning experiences.

Interesting. This is not really an option here in U?K. Technically it can be done but in effect they don't make it easy.

This is interesting. Two of my husband's nephews were homeschooled and I found them to be very well rounded, intellectual individuals. So I see nothing wrong with homeschooling if that is what parents choose.
