8 Spooktacular Halloween Songs

Halloween represents the start of the big holiday season, followed closely by Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas and New Years. It is also a festival that has many great songs associated with it. Here is a collection of those all time favorites, and perhaps a few that you might not have thought of.

1. Monster Mash - Bobby Pickett. There is not a possible Halloween song list that would be complete with out this traditional favorite. I think that we all know the words, and it is probably the most quintessential Halloween song.

2. Time Warp - Richard O'Brien. This tune is found on The Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack and is a fun song that delights young and old. I play this song at my son's school holiday parties and the kids get a kick out of seeing all of us "old people" dancing per the instructions. Who can resist making a jump to the left?

3. Boris The Spider - The Who. "Look, he's crawling up my wall. Black and hairy, very small," starts the perfect fun song about spiders, specifically one named Boris. This is fun, yet frequently overlooked, song about one of the classic symbols of Halloween - the eight-legged spider.

4. Thriller - Michael Jackson. This is another "duh" refrain that still has staying power. The video is essential viewing at the spooky time of the year. Frequently "Thriller" becomes one of the most requested songs at radio stations around the country on October 31^st.

5. This Is Halloween - Danny Elfman. From the "The Nightmare Before Christmas" soundtrack, this song is perfect for younger crowds. It has the perfect whimsy that is associated with a Disney masterpiece, and has fun lyrics such as, "I am the "who" when you call, "Who's there?" I am the wind blowing through your hair."

6. Dead Man's Party - Oingo Boingo. If you are having a Halloween party, then you must have this song on your playlist. This is a song which will get all of the boys and ghouls on the dance floor. (Sorry about that bad pun. I couldn't resist.)

7. Halloween - The Misfits. Do you need a song to enhance your toilet papering adventure? This is the one to choose! It has got a fast beat, gets your blood pumping, and is filled with great lyrics such as, "Bonfires burning bright, Pumpkin faces in the night, I remember Halloween."

8. Go Go Mummy - Zombie Ghost Train. Go directly to itunes. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Download this song. It is an amazing addition to your Halloween tune collection and is worth so much more then the dollar you'll shell out for it. "A ghoul in a cage next to the bar, was doin' the watusi for the screaming undead." This is a perfect Halloween song and will be one that you listen to long after the season is over.

This is my list of vital Halloween songs. Some are cliché, some are not so mainstream, but all will be seeping out of my car while driving the little ones around for Trick or Treat. Are there some that I missed? Please let me know in the comments.
