A Ridiculous Amount of Highlighters
I used highlighters for my planner, for books, for papers, for pretty much everything. Make sure that you have at least 10 highlighters at the beginning of each semester so that you will always have a working one on hand at all times.
Pictures of Family and Friends
There were times when I would get really home sick, which would make it quite difficult to concentrate on studying. Having pictures of family and friends would help me to remember that I had people at home rooting for me, which in turn made me want to make them proud.
Planner
It is so important to have a planner so that you can keep track of not only assignments, but group assignment meeting times, study group meeting times, exam times, days when you don't have class, social events, and even professor office hours.
No. 2 Pencils
Yes, you will need No. 2 pencils for exams and no one wants to show up to an exam unprepared. If you prefer mechanical pencils then I highly recommend getting a mechanical pencil with a larger lead than .5 for exams because it will greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to fill in the bubbles.
A Backup Plan
Blank CDs or a flash drive is definitely a must for any college freshmen. Backing up all assignments that must be done on computer is definitely necessary. Don't rely on your computer to save your work.
A Notebook for Each Class
Don't try and keep all your notes for each class in a single one subject notebook. Purchasing either a multi-subject notebook or a one subject notebook for each class will help you to keep better track of what is going on in your classes and will make studying much easier.
Emergency Funds
Having a little extra cash for emergency school supplies, medication, or anything else that might pop up is a must. You don't want to be stuck with a horrible cold exam week and have no money to purchase medication with.
Pens
You might prefer pencil, but if you don't want your notes to smear beyond recognition, I highly recommend taking notes in pen, not to mention they usually write smoother, and therefore faster than pencils.
If you have these supplies before leaving for your freshmen year of college then at least you have the very basics necessary to be a successful college student. Good luck and study hard!
