When it comes to recycling many people ask why should I recycle? The best reason to recycle is to stop unneeded waste from filling up landfills. Recycling is as simple as reusing the items you would normally throw away and reducing your amount of waste. Here are eight things you can recycle to make the world a better place.
Appliances - Many people believe when they replace old appliances to throw away the appliance they no longer use. The Goodwill and local thrift stores are great place to take your old appliances in order to recycle them.
Batteries - Both rechargeable and individual use batteries can be recycled by contacting batteryrecycling.com. Batteryrecycling.com sells recycling kits aimed at recycling old batteries. The prices of the recycling kits will depend on how many pounds of batteries you plan to recycle and includes shipping to the recycling center.
Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs) - While compact fluorescent bulbs have a much longer usage life than traditional bulbs they will still burn out from time to time. Recycling old compact fluorescent bulbs is as simple as taking them to your local Ikea store.
Cell Phones - Nearly every cell phone provider offers a recycling program for all cell phones. The recycling programs will either refurbish the telephones for resale or refurbish the telephones for soldiers overseas and other nonprofit organizations.
Eyeglasses - As your prescription changes you often throw away that old set of glasses. Many eyeglass providers collect old eye glasses and reuse the frames for donation to nonprofit organizations.
Ink Cartridges - When that old ink cartridge runs out in your printer you can use that cartridge as an exchange for a new printer cartridge at many office supply stores. If your area does not have an exchange program you can send the old ink cartridges to recycleplace.com and receive $1.00 for each cartridge.
Sneakers - Nike has started a recycling program for sneakers. The Reuse-a-Shoe program collects old sneakers and transforms the sneakers into playground flooring and athletic flooring.
Movies - Old movies can the recycled using a trading program. Using Craigslist.org or Freecycle.org you can be connected with people in your area who wish to trade or recycle old movies.
The next time you spend the day spring cleaning, why not collect items you can recycle and make an impact on global warming and landfills. Recycling takes a small amount of time and the impact is felt for many generations. If you cannot access some of the programs like Reuse-a-Shoe, local thrift stores take donations and resell the items at affordable prices. Some thrift stores are associated with non-profit organizations and donations are tax-deductible.
