8 Tips on How to Cook Barbecue Pork Ribs

Elizabeth Pou
The summer months are the best time to throw some ribs on the grill and invite the family over for a cookout. Many people who grill want to make a good impression on their family and friends. There are some tips that every person know when making good ribs for any occasion.
  1. Don't Purchase Fatty Ribs. The ribs with a lot of white on it are a very fatty rib. You want to purchase a rib that doesn't have a lot of fat on it.
  2. Determine Serving Size for each Person. The rule is around one pound of ribs per person. This is a generous serving for each guest but it can be increased to two pounds per person.
  3. Remove the Membrane. The membrane is the top portion of the rib and this should be removed. You can have the butcher or meat manager remove it. If not, the membrane can be removed with a knife. Removing the membrane will enhance the flavor of the ribs.
  4. Marinate Ribs in Refrigerator. There are two ways to marinate meat which are at room temperature or in the refrigerator. You will want to marinate ribs in the refrigerator and bring the ribs to room temperature before putting the ribs on the grill.
  5. Never Boil Ribs. Boiling ribs will make the ribs lose flavor. The alternative is to steam the ribs and this will lock in the flavor. It's best to put the ribs straight on the grill and use indirect heat.
  6. Oil the Rack. The rack of the grill should be sprayed or rubbed with oil. This will keep the meat from sticking to the grill.
  7. Never Use a Fork. It's not a good idea to pierce the meat when grilling because the juices will run out of the meat. Thongs are a good tool to use when handling the meat.
  8. Barbecue Sauce Goes on Last. The barbecue sauce should be put on the meat the last 20 minutes of cooking. Many people make the mistake of putting the barbecue sauce on at the beginning of cooking the ribs. This will cause the meat to burn.

It takes a little practice to become really good at grilling ribs or any other food. Many people like to grill during the holidays or on the weekends. These tips will have your family begging you to host the next cookout.

"Thongs are a good tool to use when handling the meat."
