Indoor tanning is sunless, and the ultraviolet (UV) lights can be controlled, checked for quality, and is available when you need it, similar to utility water. Outdoor tanning using the sun is out of your control, can fluctuate in the quality of sunlight, and only available for about 12 hours, if that. Just as utility water enhances our ability to receive and use water, indoor tanning can enhance your ability to get that perfect tanned body.
Safe Indoor Tanning Tips
1. The FDA studies the effects of indoor tanning and publishes results of its findings and recommendations. You should visit the FDA's government website for your own personal edification about indoor tanning.
2. You should pose questions to the tanning salon operator making sure she is aware of current laws and regulations.
3. As you prepare to use a tanning bed or facility, glance over the equipment to make sure operating and control panels are functioning properly.
4. Also ensure that protective accessories, such as eyewear, are used to prevent overexposure. Read tanning product labels, such as on lotions and ointments, to ensure they are not out-of-date or that they have not been discontinued or no longer found to be effective as a tanning product.
5. Besides thinking about management and control of the indoor tanning bed or facility, you should consider the quality of the tanning process itself. Similar to avoiding staying out under the sun too long, you should closely monitor how long you spend under the sunless tanning bed lights to avoid skin damage.
6. Apply your tanning lotion evenly and liberally, allowing enough time for skin absorption, to prevent rubbing off or evaporation.
7. Some medications advise not spending too much time out in the sun, because the intensity of the UV lights can have adverse effects if you are on some types of medication -- sunless indoor tanning beds use the same type of UV light. Pay particular attention to blood pressure medications and antibiotics.
8. If you feel your body temperature rising faster than normal and extreme sweating occurs take a break and assess the problem.
Keep in mind - similar to avoiding prolonged and frequent sun exposure, try not to make indoor tanning a habit - quality, not quantity.
