8 Tips for Planning Holiday Travel

Rachel de Carlos
Going away for the holidays might sound like a great idea until you consider traveling with everyone else who has the same idea. Follow these tips for planning a holiday getaway to make sure you return with happy memories.

Be flexible with travel dates.

If possible, choose a date before schools let out for the holidays to avoid the largest crowds and save on airfare. Look for local traditions of your chosen destination which might take place earlier in the month and return before the crowds. For example, the famous Blackpool illuminations in England are turned on in mid-November for the Christmas season. Visiting a place even weeks before the holidays allows you to see the sights and enjoy the local holiday customs.

Book early.

Finding good deals at the last minute is not something to count on during the holidays. Book early to be sure you get what you want and aren't forced to settle for less. The best time to book for December holidays is July or August.

Use a travel agent.

Even if you book early, it's not likely you'll get a discount on your hotel or cruise, but a travel agent can find the best values. Let someone else deal with the itinerary and the details, especially if you're having a family get together.

Budget for your travel.

It won't help you relax if you're thinking of how much the trip is costing you while you're traveling. Set aside money each month so you don't regret going away for the holidays when the bills arrive.

Check the local schedules.

If you're traveling abroad, public transportation might not run as frequently. Restaurants, museums and shops usually close on major holidays. Check your options for holiday meals and make reservations to avoid disappointment.

Take your traditions with you.

Even though you'll be away from home, you still want to feel like it's the holidays. Bring along something meaningful, for example, Christmas stockings to stuff with local trinkets.

Think ahead with photos.

Watch for an opportunity to take a photo that will be perfect on next year's holiday cards.

Attend a religious service.

Even if the same traditions aren't celebrated where you travel, attending a local service of any denomination will give you the feel for the local customs. You're sure to be made to feel welcome and might get some insider information on events in the area.

By planning ahead, you can eliminate the stress of last minute arrangements, overspending and disappointments due to local schedules. Your holiday travels should be the source of such wonderful memories that they might even become a tradition.

Even though you'll be away from home, you still want the comfortable, familiar feeling of the holidays. Take something with you to bridge that gap, like Christmas stockings to fill with local trinkets.

The bus photo is cool...I love travel and look forward to it with great expectations, but I worry now about the flu! Fling next Monday (business not pleasure) and not so much looking forward to it right now! Nice tips!

It can be chaotic travelling during holiday periods! That's why my preferred months of travel home are in November and January, as it is usually cheaper to fly to the UK when there are no holidays.
