8 Uses for Baking Soda Outside Your Home

Katri Marson
When it comes to deep and dirty outdoor mess you may think you have to buy those heavy duty harsh chemical cleaners to clean or deodorize. I am here to tell you that plain old baking soda can often run circles around those chemical cleaners. For that reason it has become a staple product in my house and it is sure to become one in yours.

Remove oil stains from driveway or garage - It is almost inevitable to end up with oil stains in your driveway or garage. To remove the stain sprinkle baking soda on the old dry stain then scrub the spot with a wet brush. Wipe up any excess baking soda.

Clean a corroded car battery - Over time all car batteries will corrode. Baking soda can help remove the built up corrosion. Before you begin the most important thing is to first make sure all the cables are safely removed from the battery. Make a baking soda paste by adding a small amount of water to the baking soda (about 3 to 1.) Apply the paste to a damp sponge or cloth and rub it around the terminals. Wipe any excess when done and replace the cables.

Clean car inside and out - Without spending extra money on brand cleaners for your car, just combine ¼ cup of baking soda to a quart of water and use the solution to clean the insides and the outside of your car, like your dashboard, seats (if they are vinyl) and the grill of the car. It especially helps get tree sap, road grime and all the other fun stuff cars end up with.

Seats and carpet in your car - If you have fabric seats in your car dust them all over with baking soda to remove odors. Do the exact same thing to the carpets in your car. Wait for about 20 minutes and then vacuum. All the odors will be gone, plus your seats and carpet will be clean, cause seriously when was the last time you vacuumed everything in your car.

Clean your hands - After a hard day working on the car or in your garden you get dirt and grime caked into your fingers, which is hard to remove with a normal hand washing. Next time sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on wet hands and then scrub lightly all around. Rinse as usual.

Clean BBQ grills - BBQ grills can get caked on with grime left from all the fun outdoor get togethers. Baking soda makes clean up easier. Make a baking soda paste with a small amount of water and apply it to a wire grill brush and scrub the grill clean. Then, rinse.

Outdoor furniture - Clean outdoor furniture with a solution of baking soda and water, rinse and your done. If you store them away in the winter sprinkle some in the stow away bags to keep them fresh.

Pools toys - Make a solution of ¼ cup of baking soda and 1 quart of water to clean pool toys. Wipe down large toys and soak small toys.
