Selling your products online can be a great way to start a new business or to branch out your current business. It can feel frustrating when your items aren't selling or you aren't getting the right price for the item. Researching how to sell your items online is the first step in the right direction. Here are some tips to keep in mind when selling your items online.



1. Location is key! Just like in the real world location is very important when it comes to selling your items online. Are you using the right venue to promote and sell your items? Auction websites are a great place to sell almost anything, however it is important to keep the higher fees in mind. Handcrafted items may sell better on a website such as Etsy.com or Artfire.com. Heavy items like furniture will sell easier on a place like Craigslist.com where the buyer can come and pick it up. Amazon.com is a great place to sell books and CDs.



2. Represent your product well with great photos . Take several pictures of your product and choose the ones that show the image in its best light. There are several guides online that show lighting techniques and help with setting the scene for your photo.



3. Describe your item with great detail. A great description will often win the buyer over by letting them know everything about the item. Try including information such as weight, measurements, color, design process etc.



4. Price your product correctly! Don't undersell yourself, if you have a unique quality product to offer, charge accordingly. Do some research to see what others are charging for similar items.



5. Communication is important to online buyers. Offer precise contact information to the buyer. Let the buyer know when you have received their payment, and when their item has been shipped. Provide tracking information. Always respond quickly to any questions about an item.



6. Packaging the product carefully will ensure that it arrives safely to your buyer. Include a packing slip and a handwritten Thank you note if possible. Make sure that you use packing material that will keep your product safe in the postal system.



7. Exceed Expectations - By going above and beyond what your customers expect from you will likely bring them back to your shop. You can do this is many creative ways. Try including a small free gift or a coupon for your shop. The buyer will tell other people about the product and the nice gesture and before you know it you have a new customer.



8. Advertise! - It is important to get the word out about your product. Make fliers and hang them around in your city. Send out emails to a mailing list. Use social networking sites to reach your customers. People can't visit your site if they do not know that it exists!
