8 Ways to Make Extra Money Without Working

Quick and Easy Pocket Change

Kelly Spies
It is possible to make extra money without having to take on another job if you know where to look. And I do mean to look within your own current budget and lifestyle. Every household has extra money and pocket change hidden within their finances. Here are a few ways you can make extra money in your own budget without working two or more jobs.

1. Work the system - If you know how to work the system then reward systems can earn you quite a bit of money. Many retailers such as Subway, TGI Friday's, Longhorn Steakhouse and Visa offer reward systems or points that entitle you to free merchandise or meal items. At Subway alone buying 14 foot long sub sandwiches will warrant you a free lunch.

If you buy soft drinks Coca-Cola has a rewards system where you can use points to purchase magazine subscriptions, DVDs, ear buds and more. These make great gifts which puts even more money back into your pocket. Don't dismiss reward cards as dorky because every penny adds up and this is a sure fire way to find extra money in your household budget.

2. Get it for free - Sometimes you have to spend money to earn money. In the case of BOGO (buy one get one free) sales it is well worth spending a little cash. Look for coupons that allow you to buy one meal and get one free. Bogo coupons are available for everything from shoes and candles to groceries and CDs. Search your local newspapers, fliers and the internet for Bogo coupons.

3. Win Big - Don't fall for online surveys as most aren't worth your time. Instead enter sweepstakes and contests. There are more contests than I can list here but doing a simple google search for free sweepstakes and contests will turn up about a gazillion results. You're bound to get lucky at least once. Listen to the radio to win tickets to concerts and movies. Enter drawings listed in magazines.

4. Get money for you life force - College students have been selling off their plasma for years and so can you. Donating blood is an easy way to make an extra $50 and you usually get a free cookie afterwards. Now that's a deal!

5. Sell photos - It might sound like another job and it does have the potential to turn into a freelance career but whether that happens or not is up to you. You can however, spend your free time taking photographs and uploading them to iStockphoto, Stockxpert or Fotolia and selling them.

6. Get Paid for your recyclables - Many states and counties require people to recycle their plastics so they can in turn recycle them for money. Why give that money to the government? Instead collect all your old newspapers, glass products and plastics and recycle them yourself. Shop around to find the best rates and I promise you that you will be able to pocket an extra $20 a month.

7. Get paid for what you already own - Selling off your own stuff, or someone else's is an easy way to make extra money. To get started you can have a yard sale, list items on eBay or Craigslist.

There are also places specifically designed for you to sell your stuff such as old unwanted cell phones. At cellforcash dot com all you have to do is submit information about your phone, send it in for inspection and wait for a response that tells you how much money you can expect to receive.

Another place you can sell your stuff to is gazelle. Gazelle takes your old unwanted electronics, inspects them and pays you for them.

8. Free Samples - Free samples rock. Pet stores give out free sample sizes of dog food, samples come in the mail and you can even order them online. Websites like yahoo.com offer free popcorn and you can even get pantyhose for free online. Spending one day ordering free samples online can easily put $10 or $15 dollars back into your wallet.

  • Use reward systems to pay for things.
  • Don't let the government get your recycling money.
  • Sell everything you don't want or need and put the money in a savings account.
It takes 1.7 cents to get a penny and 7.5 cents to get a nickel in today's economy.

I like your suggestions. I especially like buy 1 get 1 free.

A couple observations. Free samples can help in creating Christmas gift baskets. Everybody loves those because they have a bunch of stuff and they can give away what they don't want and still have a lot left. Also, as to survey suites, I've done all right with them. A couple that I don't care for, in terms of rewards, do give me magazine subscriptions (on topics I consider too mundane for my taste) which I donate to the library. They've saved a couple hundred dollars that way.

I feel like this is a waste because I am in school but am just way too busy to get a job and work study at school is full and wont open anymore jobs until spring. I need to make some money to pay bills and to save for a car and macbook pro that I will use for school. So what are my options? I can't work as school is soo busy. I am willing to do online stuff but what are my options? I know the surveys are a scam but what is not a scam that I can do out there? thanks

Although this is a good list of ideas for people needing a few more dollars, most of these involve taking time to do something to make money. This is one definition of work! If you enjoy doing these things, lkie photography, then it may be an added bonus, but if you are just doing it to make money, then it IS work!

Good job, as usual. Glad to see a money tip article that doesn't include babysitting and dumpster-diving.

Kelly I just about peed my pants at the way you worded #4. I love the tag line "Sell your life force". We don't sell our blood here in Canada...it is considered doing the right thing....but I do enjoy the free cookies and juice afterwards....
    This was a good read.
