80's Movie Review: Cocktail

Everybody Has Had a "Cocktail"

Alex Cook
Brian Flanagan, played by Tom Cruise in the movie "Cocktail", is a symbol of a lot of people here in America. Brian has just returned from the Army at a young age and is pursuing a job that will pay him the good money he thinks he is worth. Brian being young and ambitious is set to make his millions at a marketing job in New York CIty. He feels he has such a 'knack" for the business he thinks it's only a matter of selling himself to a company for the job, even without a college degree. After his last desperate attempt for a marketing position, Brian stumbles to a bar that is hiring for help. He befriends Douglas Coughlin who teaches him the "art" of bartending.

Brian enrolls in a city college to get his degree and make his millions. He is quick to find out that no matter how hard he tries in school, there is no passion for going and quickly drops out. It is during this time he has become one of the best bartenders in town. Along with Doug they have become a hit attraction and people now come to see the dynamic duo as much as they come to drink. Brian still determined to get his millions, convinces Doug to start up there own bar which they will call "Cocktails and Dreams". To finance the bar Brian travels to Jamaica, where the pay is great and there is never a shortage of people. He meets a young girl named Jordan Mooney and the two hit it off right away. Though there time together is limited they both fall in love and it is at this time we begin to see Brian as not just excited over the idea of being rich, but genuinely happy as a person. After a surprise visit from Doug who is now married to a rich vixen, Brian is dared into sleeping with another wealthy "cougar "at the bar. After winning the bet and being caught in the act by Jordan, Brians luck starts to run out.

After returning to New York with the older woman he met in Jamaica, Brian eventually comes to realize it was never the money he wanted for himself. It was just to be happy, after realizing that Jordan makes him happiest he then pursues to get her back. After finding out of her pregnancy the two patch up what happened in the past and it is only after Brian has found true happiness with Jordan, that he would open "Cocktails and Dreams". A strong message comes from this film. We've all had a similar story to this one in our life. Everyone at things they are put in this world for somethin great, and that we are supposed to be rich and famous. Alot of us go through this at an early age, and some after any major change in there life. But we all have our own individual path in life, and most of the time they will end up like this one. The sooner we all learn that a million dollars might solve some problems it wont solve all of them and will not ultimately make us happy.

I loved the movie and I was fascinated by their talent as bartenders. They were definitely a hit. Too bad his friend committed suicide! That was very sad! Excellent choice. This was one of Tom Cruise's better movies.
