80's Movie Review: Highlander

Jim Johnson
Highlander stars Christopher Lambert who plays Connor MacLeod, born in 1518 in the village of Glenfinnan; on the shores of Loch Shiel. He is believed to be killed in battle, with a rival Scottish clan, by a Black Knight called Kurgan (Clancy Brown) from Russia. He soon discovers he belongs to a race of immortals that live forever, unless one immortal decapitates another, and releases their Quickening-used to sense each other. These battles exist through time until the time of the Gathering; when those who remain battle for the Prize. Only one can prevail.

Highlander depicts the classic good vs. evil theme in the encounters between MacLeod and Kurgan. The costumes which span the period of 16th Century Scotland, to the modern jeans/t-shirt, and jacket attire for 1980's New York City.

The romance(s) between MacLeod and his first wife Heather (Beatie Edney), and Brenda Wyatt (Roxanne Hart), lend a civilizing back drop to a film with scenes of violence and death. Also the tutelage of Juan Sanchez Vila-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery), adds to the more cultured air of the modern-day Highlander.

The climatic ending of MacLeod versus Kurgan ends with Kurgan slowly losing his head, literally, and flash of ghostly images accentuating the winning of the Prize, will send thrills and chills down the spine of the Scifi/Action fan.

I recommend this film if you're a fan of swash-buckling action, and adventure buff. Highlander will keep you on the edge of your seat, and keep the thrills coming!

Other than Highlander, the only other English-speaking film Christopher Lambert starred in was Greystoke:The Legend of Tarzan.
