80's Music Review: NWA's Straight Outta Compton

Controversial Then, Controversial Now

P. Trembeth
N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton was one of the first wildly successful Rap/Hip-Hop albums in America. It had massive popular appeal to all corners of society, by describing the hardships of the inner city African American youth during the 1980's. Years later, Straight Outta Compton is considered one of the most influential albums in the genre, reshaping the lyrics and style of Rap music for the next 15 years.

The album is not for the faint of heart, as there are very few songs that don't contain profane language or sexually and criminally suggestive lyrics. While resulting in many problems with the law and government during the time, these hard core lyrics remain one of the main reasons that this album is still wildly popular. N.W.A. remained true to their message, refusing to tone down just to be accepted. They exposed urban problems, such as gang violence, that middle America had never experienced. Songs like "Gangsta, Gangsta", "F*** Tha Police", and "Straight Outta Compton" are prime examples of this ingenious style of writing by these true street poets.

Without Straight Outta Compton, artists such as Scarface, 50 Cent, and Eminem could have never risen to prominence with the explicit lyrics messages they promoted, making Straight Outta Compton truly revolutionary. N.W.A. may have been "coming straight from the underground" but now they are Rap and entertainment legends.
