80's Review: Madona's Like a Virgin

Madonna: Pop Queen or Music Legend?

Madonna, her name alone is synonymous with the 80's.The image she created dripping with power, money and animal sex appeal. But to those of us who worshiped her as starry eyed teenagers. She'll always be the innocent little catholic girl with her big hair and punk clothing. Singing to us about what it means to be "Like A Virgin' before her second hit record, Madonna was a relative unknown, achieving a small amount of success with her first album, but still struggling to make her way in a world just opening up to a whole new pop culture and the roles women would play in it. She was determined not to follow the path of everyone else. To create her own way, her own style. And that's just what she did. Like A Virgin, the second album created and released by Madonna in 1984, was also the first album she decided to take on tour. And the phenomenal cover art, in the cute and punky wedding dress. Inspired millions of teenage girls the world over, and still today remains one of Madonnas iconic looks.

Like A Virgin was written by struggling songwriters Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg who had repeatedly approached other big names hoping to sell there song. Eventually they found there way to the door step of Madonna, who, along with her sultry voice, suggestive dance moves and attempts to blow away her "nice catholic girl" persona. Achieved image making results. In the beginning, Like A Virgin was not readily embraced by Nile Rogers. Who was chosen by Madonna to produce her second album. One she hoped would be an even bigger success than her first. Named simply MADONNA after the queen herself. With such irresistible singles as LUCKYSTAR and BORDERLINE it made its way to the top of the record charts and Madonna found herself arriving at her sex symbol status. Which just skyrocketed further with the release of Like a Virgin. One of the singles recorded on Madonnas album was her hit , Material Girl. Which just happened to set her up with the infamous cognomen she carried for the next 20 years.

Madonna put a lot of heart into her second album. But sadly, Like a Virgin was not received very well by her critics. She was chastised for her poor vocal skills and being a 'one hit wonder.' However, her always loyal following of fans knew better. And so, the infamous career of the material girl was born.Today her image remains that of a strong, sexy, extremely talented self made woman. Who pushed the limits, broke all the rules and claimed her spot in the world as the queen of pop. A legend of her own making. But to us, her forever beloved teenage fans. Who have grown older, right along with her. She'll always be our material girl. Forever immortalized by the release of our icon Like a Virgin.
