8/24 New York Giants Injury Report Via Head Coach Tom Coughlin
Injury Updates for Several Giants Players
New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has been without several key parts of his roster during the Giants' two preseason football games this August. Coughlin spoke about some of those injuries on Tuesday.
Coughlin stated that Jason Pierre-Paul and Chris Canty are both dealing with groin injuries. Pierre-Paul is currently "day to day" and it is not known if Pierre-Paul will play this weekend. While you'd like to see a rookie like Pierre-Paul play in the third preseason game of the year, historically the "most important" game of the preseason for NFL teams, expect the Giants to leave the young pass rusher on the sidelines if the team feels his injury could get worse by taking the field this weekend.
Quarterback Eli Manning is "taking all the snaps that he can get" and is expected to put a helmet on tomorrow. The team has no plans to rush Manning, who was busted open in the preseason opener against the Jets. Manning will be fine before the start of the regular season and you can be sure that one of the toughest quarterbacks in the NFL will be on the field before the end of the preseason.
Running back DJ Ware is "not being given the green light" by team doctors after suffering a concussion in last Saturday's loss to the Steelers. Ware has a history of concussions and there is absolutely zero chance of Ware seeing game action until he is 100 percent. NFL teams and the league, in general, are not taking any head injuries lightly these days. Bad news for the at-times promising running back, as this concussion could eventually cost him a roster spot with the Giants.
Safety Kenny Phillips is progressing just fine (knee) and, due to other injury issues plaguing the Giants' secondary, could see more reps this weekend. Finally, some good news for the Giants. A healthy Phillips is sorely needed, and it would be ideal for him to be in "season form" by September 12.
Aaron Ross (plantar fasciitis, the same problem Eli Manning dealt with during the 2009 NFL regular season), is no better and no worse as of Tuesday afternoon. Coughlin stated that Ross will be sporting a "boot or cast" soon. As with Manning last season, Ross is a "wait and see" situation at the moment. If he is experiencing pain in the next few weeks, however, it could be bad times come week 2 of the 2010 NFL regular season.
