Be proactive
People feel that when they are under stress or aiming to stop obsessive thoughts, relaxing or deep breathing can help them overcome the situation. But the fact is, an idle mind breeds more unwanted thoughts. Staying proactive or at least keeping oneself occupied in some physical activities can counteract obsessive thoughts. Brisk walking and workouts are the best activities that exercise the cardiovascular system. Remember, an active body can deactivate obsessive thoughts
Do something that you are obsessed about
To counter the thought perform those actions that are totally against your thoughts. If you are obsessed about getting infected by germs when you touch an object in a public place, touch the object. This way you will gradually get over the fear factor and start thinking logically.
Visualize a red signal
Visualize a stoplight whenever you feel an obsessive thought is brewing. Take charge of your thoughts before they take complete control of you. For example, wash your hands and visualize that all the germs are being washed away with the flowing water and feel happy about the act. This is a creative and positive visualization process to stop obsessive thoughts rule you.
Divert your concentration
Don't keep yourself preoccupied with these obsessive thoughts. Instead once you have counter acted on them divert your attention to another chore. Take up an easy task that you are capable of handling and can feel satisfied with in the end. Listening to music, dancing, exercising, playing with a toddler and browsing the Internet are good mental diversions to stopping obsessive thoughts.
Think of the opposite
Always think of the opposite. Every time you see a mirror and feel that you are fat, consciously state that you are thin and are looking wonderful. Think of those who are obese and be happy you are not one of them.
Challenge obsession with prudence
Another effective strategy is to overcome deep-rooted fear. The fear factor is the root cause for such obsessive thoughts. Maintain a journal to note your behavioral pattern and identify the fear factor. Now that you know the cause you can treat it directly. If you generally feel, you need to wash hands till the line of life vanishes to prevent infection it will be wiser to think that continuously washing hands can invite more diseases.
Treat thoughts as just thoughts
When you are obsessed with thoughts make sure you treat them just as thoughts. Now that you know you are a victim of obsessed thoughts don't fall into the trap again and again. Tune you mind to treat thoughts rationally and not treat it as a reality. Manage your thoughts and eliminate fear from your life.
Come out of your shell
When we perform actions regularly, it becomes a part of our routine and gradually becomes a habit. One simple but effective method is to come off your regular activities that make you feel obsessed. Simply put, take a break and do things you often don't get time to do - gardening, bowling, an eat-out with family or a casual visit to your friends/ relatives. Do something off your routine, that's the key.
Identify the unsolved issues
There will be a couple of unsolved issues that may be troubling you day in and day out. Set some time to rationally think about these 'unresolved' issues and give the issue a thought. What is important is to adhere by the specified time and remember not to spend more than 15 minutes on the issue. If you cannot find an answer in 15 minutes you can never get a solution by pondering over it for more than the time allotted.
These techniques may sound 'easy-said-than-done' but if put into practice you will be amazed in a couple of weeks that you have smartly overcome and have put a full stop to obsessive thoughts.
