1. Chair slipcover - This is the perfect use for an antique quilt that has some damage on it. You can use the good areas to cut our your pattern and avoid any damaged areas. This is also a good project made out of a new store bought quilt.
2. Pillow shams - These are simple to make, you and simply sewing four sides in a straight line. You could even use No Sew for a project like this. Lay your pillow out on your antique quilt, trace with a marker, and then cut it out. Sew the edges together. Leave one end open to slide your pillow in. This is another great project for a quilt that is not in 100% perfect condition.
3. Curtains - You can hang your antique quilts without causing any damage to them for this project if you will use curtain clips. If you are worried about the prongs of the clips digging into your antique quilt place a small piece of felt in between your quilt and the clip.
4. Shower curtain - This is a great way to warm up a small sterile bathroom. Use those curtain clips again, the kind that come attached to a ring. Hang your rings on the shower rod and you will have a designer look in your bathroom.
5. Purse - Use a vintage pattern for a pocket book or purse. Instead of buying material use an old quilt. The look is utterly Grandma Chic and never goes out of style. Line the inside with a contrasting fabric for some extra fun.
6. Beach bag or book bag - Simply cut out to pieces of 14"X20" pieces from your old quilt. Hem one end of each piece of the fabric, sew the other three sides together and add one some handles. Easy!
7. Pet bed - Pets love soft old blankets. Make them their own pet bed by cutting tow large circles out of your old quilt. Sew them together, leaving a three inch opening. Turner the pet bed inside out and stuff with cotton pillow fluff. Ad some cedar chipping to help reduce pet smells. Put some Velcro one the opening and you can wash the pet bed and change the fluff and cedar to a needed. Use a dark quilt to hide dirt.
8. Wall Hanging - There are number of ways your can hang and display an old or antique quilt. You don't; have to cause any damage to it either. Hang a long curtain bar on you wall. Clip on café curtain clips and attach your quilt to the curtain rod.
You can also attach Velcro to the top of your quilt. Line it up with Velcro on the wall to easily hang it.
Finally, you could also display your antique quilt by folding it up and displaying it in a large shadow box. The kind made for sports jerseys is a great option.
9. Place mats - This is a very easy craft perfect for using up left over piece of old quilt from some of these other projects. Simply cut out your placemats to size. Turn the rough edges over and hem them. You could also use a contrasting fabric on the back. Face the patterns together. Sew all four side leaving a small opening so your can turn the placemat inside out. Lay it flat and iron it to lay flat. Tuck the rough ends of the opening in to hide them. You can easy sew this area shut by hand or slide in some no sew and iron it together.
