9 Simple Tips to Effectively Alleviate Insomnia and Regain Restful Sleep

Miles Tyler
From time to time, we all have nights when we suffer from lack of sleep. You feel tired but your mind is racing and you just can't fall asleep no matter how hard you try. Insomnia can occur for many different reasons. Diet and eating habits can have a huge impact on your ability to fall asleep. I have compiled a list of natural ways that I have used for dealing with insomnia. You should find some information here that will help you to have a good night's sleep.

1.) Avoid caffeine. If you must consume it, then do so as early in the day as possible.

2.) Do not eat anything that is heavy very late in the evening. Your digestive system needs to rest too.

3.) Meditation. Take some time late in the evening before retiring to bed to just slow your mind down and quite your thoughts. Listen to some soothing music if necessary.

4.) Eat a banana. Eating a banana about an hour or so before retiring to bed can actually help you to fall asleep as bananas naturally contain the essential amino acid l-tryptophan which has been found to help induce sleep.

5.) Don't remain in bed. If you are having trouble sleeping the last thing you want to do is stay in bed awake. Get up and move around a bit or read or try one of the other remedies mentioned here like going for a walk.

6.) Go for a walk. Exercise is always a healthy option and walking will help to make your body tired.

7.) Chamomile tea. If you are not feeling tired before bed time then you should try drinking an herbal infusion containing chamomile or passion flower. These will soothe you and help to make you feel drowsy.

8.) Valerian tea. If you are suffering from chronic insomnia or recovering from jet lag, then I highly recommend that you try drinking valerian tea each night about an hour or so before going to bed. This has been found to help people recover from insomnia. Eventually your body will adjust and you will fall asleep naturally without valerian as it is not habit forming.

9.) Essential oils. Something else that I have found that aids in relaxing is essential oils such as lavender and patchouli. Their fragrances have a calming and soothing effect that can help you to relax and sleep peacefully.
