9 Tips for Back to School Shopping

These Tips Will Save You Both Time and Money

Dee Dee Smith
It's about time for the kids to head back to school, and this is obvious by all of the television and newspaper ads for back to school clothing and supplies. Before you go shopping, here are some "pre" things to do. Following these tips are sure to save you both time and money.

1. Gather the kids and go through what they can still wear or cannot wear. Even if they can wear something, examine it for missing buttons, stains and rips. Give away items that the kids can no longer wear, and throw away clothing that is in really poor condition. Put clothes that need repair in a storage container to work on later.

2. Organize the clothes that your kids will be able to wear to school in categories, i.e. pants, skirts, blouses, socks, shoes, etc. Now color coordinate them, i.e., black pants, white shirts, etc.

3. Do the same thing with accessories like hair barrettes and earrings, and school supplies like crayons, pencils, notebook paper, etc. Put loose crayons together in a storage bag. Group all of the kids' school supplies together, don't separate them. Something that your older child no longer needs may be usable now by your younger child.

4. Put together an inventory list of what the kids already have. This will ensure that you do not duplicate purchases.

5. Decide how many pairs of pants, shirts, t-shirts, etc. your kids will need to complete their wardrobe. Write these down and keep with your inventory list.

6. Contact the school to see if they have received a school supply list from your child's teacher. If they have, pick it up or have the list mailed to you. If one is not available, refer to one of the on-line resources to see what supplies are applicable for your student's grade.

7. Once you receive the list, compare it to your inventory list to access what supplies your child will need. Add your school supply needs to your clothing needs list and you're almost ready to go shopping. Remember to include things that will help your child with organization like crayon organizers, pencil holders, backpacks, etc.

8. If you have a home office, you should also do an inventory of your office supplies. Remember that the kids will need to use the computer for reports, etc. Things you want to take an inventory of are printer cartridges, staples, paper clips, printer paper, etc. Once you do an inventory, determine what you will need for the office and add them to your needs list.

9. Go through newspaper ads to see what sales are available and don't forget to check for coupons. Cut out ads and coupons so you will know what you are looking for. Now put all of your lists/ads together in a folder or large envelope. You should have with you your inventory list, needs lists, ads and coupons.

Happy Shopping!
