90210 Returns to Television This Fall

America's Most Famous Zip Code Makes an Ill-fated Reappearence This Fall on the CW Network

I am sure many of you were just like me, especially if you happen to be television junkies. Sitting in front of the television every week, anxiously waiting to see what kind of trouble the Walsh siblings got themselves into on the mega hit television series Beverly Hills, 90210. Now how many of you miss those days and look upon them with fond reflection? Well have I got great news for you. Thanks to the CW television network, we do not have to look back and remember anymore. 90210, a spin-off television series of the classic Beverly Hills, 90210 is slated to premier this fall on the CW network, the station that brought us the cream of the crop shows Pussycat Dolls: Girlicious and Farmer Wants a Wife.

The story behind the CW network's newest spin-off of Beverly Hills, 90210 - remember Melrose Place was also a spin-off on FOX - is even flimsier than the original's, which is saying a lot. Brother and sister pair, Dixon and Annie Mills move to Beverly Hills with their family from their comfortable Kansas lives to help keep an eye on their grandmother, a "feisty-but-faded television star and a charter member of the Betty Ford Clinic" (taken from the CW network press release). Oh wait, it gets even better. As if starting at West Beverly Hills High School is not hard enough when you're from a freak place like Kansas, your father takes a new job as the principle of your school!

Adding to this amazing story of 90210, and oh so different from the original as it is, are the students and friends of the Walsh, I mean Mills, kids. Let's look at the differences between the old and new for a minute, just to make sure the originality is there. We have the Mills kids, who are completely different from the Walshs because they are not twins. Then we have our Dylan-type character in the form of a jock by the name of Ethan who is almost as good of an athlete as our Dixon. The original Beverly Hills, 90210 had Jennie Garth's spoiled rich-girl character Kelly Taylor, and the CW network's new incarnation has a spoiled rich-girl by the name of Naomi. In order to make this impossible transition from crappy premise to crappy premise easier, the CW brought back Jennie Garth as a grown-up Kelly Taylor, who now works as a guidance counselor at West Beverly Hills High School. I bet she is ready for a few 'very special episodes' of 90210. The rest of the friends in this ill-fated drama read like a bad impersonation call sheet of the original characters, but likely with half the talent.

With that scathing look at the CW network's 90210, past us, let me say that I will be glued to the television this fall to see how this pans out. Many of you may be asking why, and the answer is a two-parter. First off, I loved the original when I was a kid, so I have to check this one out. Secondly, it does have Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah as executive producers, who are the minds that helped bring us Freaks & Geeks. You can watch a trailer for the CW network's 90210 here, and then decide for yourself this fall if they live up to the original or not.

Hardly a TV junkie. I no longer have DSL at home and have been so bored I plugged in the TV. It got boring fast. But I do watch the new 90210. My oldest daughter liked the orignal. Said she is not watching the new one; too teen silly. I said, "well the old one was too...". Now I am in the mood for 90210 reruns!

NO, NO, NO!! It took me years not to be mistaken for Jason Priestly at the mall. This time I should charge for autographs & pics.

I watched the original 90210 and actually enjoyed it. I don't have high hopes for this new version. Great article!

I didn't watch either BH 90210 or Melrose place, and won't be watching this crap either -- but it's still a great review. Good job on that!
