90's Makeup is Back: How to Update Your Makeup Look

NOM
Makeup with a 90's inspired look is coming back into fashion - if you were wearing makeup from the first time the 90's makeup was in vogue, there are some things that you will need to do to update your look: If you did not wear makeup in the 90's, then the precision and intensity of 90's makeup will take some getting used to in order to apply your makeup correctly.

Update opaque lipsticks by mixing with Vaseline to create a sheer gloss, or use your favorite clear lip plumper like Fusions' Lip Fusion or Too Faced Lip Plumping Extreme glosses to add some plump to your pigmented pout. Nineties makeup was done with a very precise lip line, a look we got away from when lips were primarily glossy and not as rigid. As long as you apply some sort of base with a lip brush and blend well, you will get the more defined look to your lips without heavy use of lipliner.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize - colors will be heavier, but aging skin tolerates that less well. Consider a good moisturizer like Clinique Dramatically Different lotion. Makeup is nineties colors but will still retain the dewy look.

The nineties colors were more pigmented and smoky - this time around anyone can get a fantastic looking smoky eye with the new mineral makeup and the great applicator brushes that these companies sell to blend darker colors. Don't use the sponge applicators that come with your typical eyeshadow, visit Sephora or Ulta or Bare Minerals and invest in some quality brushes intended to define and shade the eye area - the key to the smoky eye is blending without removing too much color. Many of the smokey shadows double as eyeliners when you dip your brush in water first. This gives an enhancing line that is not too harsh. Avon, LancĂ´me, Paula Dorf and Too Faced, amongst others, make a special liquid to turn any shadow into a liquid line consistency without being too wet and watery, this helps make your smoky eye look appear a bit neater even if you can't apply liquid eyeliner. Since eyelashes and extensions are still big, you do not need as dark a line as was used in the nineties, so a smudge of taupe, gold, or mossy green is better than black - which will give too dark and heavy a look. Make eyeshadow stick with a light dusting of translucent powder before shadow application. You can use most intense colors but stick to sheer washes of colors layered for intensity like Calvin Klein washes or Nars multiples.

Brows were more defined in the nineties, as seen on the front of the Sephora catalog. Several good brow shaping kits exist like the Anatasia line, and it is a worthwhile investment to get your brows professionally shaped once and then pluck the strays yourself. A clean brow is best above a controlled smoky eye shadow.

When doing your makeup in the updated nineties styles make sure your overall makeup matches - a smoky eye and intense lipstick look cannot entire skip blush. Avoid browns if possible and stick with the pinks with some shimmer as a highlight.
