9/11 We Will Never Forget

9/11 Etched in Our Minds Forever

Karen Bishop
We will never forget. How many times have we said or heard these words? A million, two? I feel it can't be said enough sometimes, because it is the truth. We will never forget 9/11. This is my way to honor the anniversary of a day forever etched in our minds.

9/11, we will never forget. We wondered at first how such an accident could happen. Why would a plane fly into one of the towers? All too soon, we learned it was no accident. I was at the restaurant that my husband and I worked at, hanging out and watching him. As people came into the restaurant, we started hearing the first whispers of what was happening.

9/11, we will never forget. Those of us who could rushed home and sat riveted in front of our televisions. The feelings of shock, horror and disbelief as our hearts were ripped out of our chest. Tears streaming down our face like acid, hoping people we knew were still alive.

9/11, we will never forget. A nightmare none of us could wake up from. I sat on my couch wanting so much to grab my daughter from school. I wanted to have her with me, holding her close and tight. No one knew what might happen next or where. She would be safe in my arms where nothing could get to her. I wanted to rush back to work and into my husbands arms, to hear his heart beating.

9/11, we will never forget. The nation held its collective breath as first one, then the other, tower came crashing down. I yelled, "Oh my god! NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!" over and over. Hearing the echo of my words bounce off the walls, hearing the echo of millions of voices merge with mine. "No, please Goddess no," I whisper to myself.

9/11, we will never forget. Nothing new being said on the tv now. Back to the restaurant to be with people because I couldn't stand to be alone one more minute. We all needed that feeling of togetherness. We were bound to one another, tied together by ropes of grief and heartbreak.

9/11, we will never forget. It was a day with no end as we huddled together in our homes. People holding each other tighter, calling loved ones to just I love you. How long has it been since we talked? I love you. We're fine, we heard Joe is safe. I love you. Sally wants to stay up late but that's okay. I love you.

9/11, we will never forget. So many died today and many more still missing. Men and women frantically digging, choking on smoke and dust swirling in the air. The stench on the wind that will never be removed from their noses.

9/11, we will never forget. For all the names of those who died that I have no room to list, you will live on in our hearts. You will always be remembered, loved and missed whether we knew you or not. For the men and women who worked around the clock and their names I have no room to list, you will never be forgotten. The spirit of millions were beside you. For your service, you paid a high price with your health.

9/11, we will never forget.

I don't know how I missed this one. My Marine son was home on leave that day. I came home from work at lunch and saw him standing in the kitchen. "I read the news today, oh boy," he sang (from an old Beatles song). I ran up to him and hugged him, knowing that our world had just been altered significantly. His sisters and I used to be able to walk him to the plane every time he had to leave us. Nobody was prepared for how everything would change for us. For everybody.

Great writing, Karen. I think the words spoken by our President when Pearl Harbor was bombed can be repeated for 9/11..."A day that will live in infamy." By the way, if you want to read about the experiences of one of the last people to get out of one of the towers safely, then check out this book: From Heaven to Ground Zero. What a read!

9/11 is one of those days that people will forever remember where they were that day, I know I won't forget it or what I was doing at the time. It definately changed the way we think about things.
