99er Desires and Tier 5 Unemployment Extension: 99ers Are Forgotten?

The 99ers Want...I Mean NEED...An Unemployment Extension. When Will Help Be on the Way?

Meg G.
The 99ers want a Tier 5 unemployment extension amid a weekly unemployment claims decline. The metric, used in part to determine how bad the unemployment situation is in the United States, could be used to thwart efforts for a long-term unemployment extension bill that goes beyond the 99 weeks in place.

You may think that we do not need a Tier 5 extension right now; after all, the jobless claims are decreasing! That is not the case. In order to use the numbers to make decisions, you have to consider the situation surrounding the figure as well.

First, ask yourself this: Why are the jobless claims decreasing? The figure is based on the number of people who apply for unemployment benefits. There are three things that can cause someone to be excluded from this figure: getting a job and no longer needing benefits, exhausting available benefits, or giving up looking for a job.

It's not good to assume that people are finding jobs. This is not the case, and if you need proof just spend an hour or so surfing the Internet. You will find comments on message boards and blog posts pointing to the severity of the situation that many people are in.

Many people have exhausted benefits. Many have simply quit looking for a job. Most are growing skeptical that Washington is concerned about their needs.

The two politicians that have openly claimed to be working on Tier 5 legislation are largely absent from the bill landscape. Charles Schumer (D-NY) was quoted as saying "There are a number of people who have maxed out, they've been looking and looking for work but haven't found it, and there is a separate act that would extend those benefits to them,. Extending this was really important. There are some people who go beyond the 99 weeks and we're gonna try to do that next."

Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) has also been vocal as well, saying "I wish that the bill we passed helped those who have been looking for work the longest - the so-called "99ers." I'm working on a bill to help them because, when there are five people out of work for every one job opening, it's the right thing to do."

The senate is breaking for their summer recess starting tomorrow, and it doesn't appear as if a Tier 5 legislation bill will be placed up for discussion before that time. I have an inkling that a Tier 5 for the 99ers won't even be discussed until AFTER the mid-term elections.

    To whom it may concern,
Please help. I'm getting ready to be homeless. I have no money, and their are very little jobs available. It's hard out here. Please hear me. I am not lazy. I've been at my last job for eleven years. I'm looking for a job every day. I even went back to school to get another trade under my belt, but theirs nothing out here. Please find it in your hearts to give us relief. We're really suffering out here. I'm getting sick from stress(literaly). Please help us with a tier 5. I'm sure we all (99ers) will be forever grateful to you all. Thank you.

Senator Reid, don't forget the people that voted you into office. I drive pass Las Vegas Blvd. to go to work, and I see too many HOMELESS MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN and I know most of these ppl. were NEVER HOMELESS UNTIL NOW. I am ASHAMED of AMERICA on ALLOWING THEIR PPL. TO GO HOMELESS AND HUNGRY, BUT HAS THE MONEY TO HELP OTHER COUNTRIES INSTEAD OF HELPING THEIR AMERICAN PEOPLE...That goes to PRESIDENT OBAMA, TOO.

I just don't get it. And they want to give the wealthy a tax cut? Sounds like they are giving the rich more attention than the starving. All men are created equal but it's a rich man's country and that will destroy us unless law's are passed .... starting with helping the 99er's. This proves that Republicans are for the rich and Democrats are for the poor and less fortunate....but I also think that all the politicians are really there for the money in their pockets. Good luck to you all and remember that God is with you. He knows what each individual has in their heart.

Well, i have finally reached my breaking point.....i have always been a Republican supporter in all the elections......now however this wil change due to there laxity in hgelping those who need financial assistance through unemployment benefits extensioms...rest assured I WILL NOw VOTE DEMOCRAT...and get rid of these self absorbing, egotistical, and greedy SOBs!!!!!

Well NO, think they are going to test the waters on the issue? I dont have a lot of faith in them. After all these are the people that waited weeks to pass the deadline for others to collect thier 99 weeks. They are not there for the people they are their for THEMSELVES like they always have been. We foot the bill for their lavish vacation spots and weeks of paid vacation. They cant even agree on one issue to help the American people. ITS DISCUSTING! Well we ALL have a VOICE, it is called your VOTE! I hope you all use it wisely!
