A Band Undiscovered: The Antiquisity Story

Erin Stone
Antiquisity is the best thing that you've never heard about. The high school anger-infused metal band was formed in Quebec in mid-November 2002 by Chris (formerly known as Zane), who was just looking for some fellow musicians to play with. They started off covering bands like Simple Plan and the Red Hot Chili Peppers and then progressing to more difficult musical acts such as Slipknot and Cradle of Filth. However, covering bands wouldn't satisfy them. They strived to create something different by writing their own music under guidance by Stan Able. Their four best songs were chosen to be recorded onto a mini album, which was recorded in late 2003 and features the underground hit "Run Away". The rest of the songs were not recorded due to pending for a full-length album to be recorded. In the meantime, Antiquisity enjoyed success during 2004 by doing live shows for fundraisers and entering numerous "Battle of the Band" competitions.

Each member of the band brought something unique to the table both in talent and looks; most of them also came with an original stage name. The only female of the group, and lead vocalist, Natasha's love of Evanescence lent itself to her hauntingly powerful voice while her back corset piercings certainly turned heads. Lead guitarist, Matrix, worshipped Hendrix as is evident in his total explosion on the guitar. I'm told he had piercings on his scrotum made to form a Christmas tree. That one's probably best left unseen. Second guitarist, Dimitri, was just as famous for his insane hairstyles as he was for his Pennywise-inspired playing. Frodmeyer, the bass guitarist, always rocked out with his nails decked out in shiny colourful polish. The only one not tattooed or pierced was Zane, the Slipknot-obsessed powerhouse drummer, who I rank as one of my closest friends. Together, they were unstoppable. Then, regrettably, tragedy struck.

In September of 2005, Matrix was walking to a music store in Montreal. As he went to cross the street, he was hit by a car. The driver didn't see the stop sign and stopped abruptly. Unfortunately, he clipped Matrix's leg and he fell, banging his head hard on the pavement, instantly killing him. With the loss of their friend, the band slowly fell apart. According to Chris, Dimitri moved to Italy, and both Natasha and Frodmeyer just disappeared out of his life.

Several years later, after toying with the idea, Chris has decided to try and start Antiquisity up again from scratch. While he doesn't like talking about the old band, he wants to pay tribute to Matrix through the continuation of their musical project. He adopted a new twist to the Antiquisity story by giving himself the new nickname Darius. Chris also has added a science fiction-like story to the name. Darius claims to be from the future and has traveled back in time to save the "freaks" from normality. A likely story, but it could be just the thing to draw in curious followers.

Chris has also taken that story to another level by gathering interest for a video game. It's currently still only in writing at the moment, but with the backing from a major company it seems like a genuine possibility. It will supposedly be released in 2009/2010 depending on how things go. The game seems to be along the lines of an action/adventure deal based on the history of Darius. As a close friend, I supposedly will also be incorporated into the game under the alias DarkStone Bathory. Given that I'm only a band affiliate and not a member I feel a little unworthy of this blessing, but, since I've been asked to play keyboard for the band, maybe I should just shut up and kick butt.

If you're interested in more information about the band or you think you have what it takes to join, then click the link below. However, in the interest of potential copyright infringements, there are no public posts of any of Antiquisity's old stuff, but take it from me that they rocked. Unfortunately, you'll just have to wait for new recordings before you can make a judgement. I encourage you to check the site out for whatever reason and hopefully, you'll become a fellow freak and follower
