The franchise was founded in 1871 as the Boston Red Stockings. The team stayed in Boston through the 1952 season but changed its name several times.
From 1883-1906, they were the Beaneaters, and from 1907-1910, they were the Doves. They were the Rustlers for the 1911 season. In 1912, the team became the Braves for the first time, but, from 1936-1940, the team was known as the Bees. In 1941, the team changed its name back to the Braves, which it has been ever since.
Following the 1952 season, the Braves moved from Boston to Milwaukee, becoming the Milwaukee Braves.
The franchise moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta prior to the 1966 season and has been the Atlanta Braves since.
In the history of the franchise, the team has played its home games at seven different locations. In Boston, the team played at South End Grounds, Congress Street Grounds, Fenway Park, and Braves Field.
While in Milwaukee, the Braves played all of their home games at Milwaukee County Stadium.
The Braves spent their first thirty years in Atlanta playing in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, which was also known simply as Atlanta Stadium for the first ten years the Braves played there. The Braves began playing in their current location, Turner Field, in 1997.
In the history of the Atlanta Braves' franchise, it has won a total of sixteen Division titles. The team won the West Division five times in 1969, 1982, and 1991-1993. They won the East Division eleven straight times from 1995-2005.
The franchise has also won the National League seventeen times in 1877, 1878, 1883, 1891-1893, 1897, 1898, 1914, 1948, 1957, 1958, 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996, and 1999.
The franchise has also won three World Series titles. The Boston Braves won in 1914. The Milwaukee Braves won in 1957, and the Atlanta Braves won in 1995.
Six numbers have been retired by the Braves. The players whose numbers have been retired are Dale Murphy - 3, Warren Spahn - 21, Phil Niekro - 35, Eddie Mathews - 41, Jackie Robinson - 42, and Hank Aaron - 44. Robinson's number is retired throughout baseball.
The Atlanta Braves are currently owned by Liberty Media and John Malone. Bobby Cox is the manager, and John Schuerholz is the general manager.
The official colors of the Atlanta Braves are navy blue, garnet red, and white.
