A Basic History of the Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors are a professional basketball team that plays in the National Basketball Association. The team is currently based in Oakland, California, where it plays its home games at Oracle Arena, which is part of the same complex as the Oakland Coliseum, home of the Oakland A's and Oakland Raiders.

The Warriors play in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference in the NBA.

The Warriors' franchise was founded in 1946 in Philadelphia. From 1946-1962, the team played its games in Philadelphia. In 1962, the team moved from Philadelphia to San Francisco, becoming the San Francisco Warriors. In 1971, the team changed its name to the Golden State Warriors and soon moved across the San Francisco Bay to its current home in Oakland.

While in Philadelphia, the team played its home games in the Philadelphia Arena and the Philadelphia Convention Hall. During the team's time in the San Francisco Bay Area, the team has played in the Cow Palace, the San Francisco Civic Auditorium, the USF War Memorial Gym, the San Jose Arena, and its current home, Oracle Arena, which was previously known as the Oakland Coliseum Arena and the Oakland Arena.

The team is currently owner by Chris Cohan and coached by Don Nelson. The team's official colors are blue, orange, yellow and white.

The franchise has won a total of seven division titles, winning in 1948, 1951, 1956, 1964, 1967, 1975 and 1976. They have won six conference titles in 1947, 1948, 1956, 1964, 1967 and 1975. The franchise has also won a total of three championships, one in the BAA, 1947, and two in the NBA, 1956 and 1975.

The franchise has had eleven members go on to become members of the Basketball Hall of Fame. The ten players were Paul Arizin, Rick Barry, Wilt Chamberlain, Joe Fulks, Tom Gola, Neil Johnston, Jerry Lucas, Robert Parish, Andy Phillip and Nate Thurmond. Eddie Gottlieb, the team's founder and former owner, is also enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Warriors have a total of six retired numbers: 13 for Wilt Chamberlain, 14 for Tom Meschery, 16 for Al Attles, 24 for Rick Barry, 42 for Nate Thurmond, and 17 for Chris Mullin.

Wilt Chamberlain is the all-time points leader for the franchise with 17,783. Nate Thurmond has the most rebounds with 12,771. Guy Rodgers leads with 4,855 assists. Chris Mullin has the most steals with 1,360, and Adonal Foyle leads with 1,090 blocks.
