A Basic History of the Sacramento Kings Basketball Team

The Sacramento Kings are a professional basketball team that plays in the National Basketball Association. The Kings play in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference.

The Sacramento Kings are currently owned by the Maloof family. The official colors of the Sacramento Kings are black, purple, silver, and gold.

The franchise was founded in 1945 in Rochester. The team, known as the Rochester Royals, played its home games in Edgerton Park Arena from 1945-1955 and in Rochester War Memorial from 1955-1957.

In 1957, the team moved to Cincinnati, becoming the Cincinnati Royals. The team played its home games in Cincinnati Gardens until 1972 when the team moved to Kansas City and Omaha, splitting its home games between the two cities. The team also changed its name from the Royals to the Kings after this move.

In Kansas City, the team played its home games in Kansas City Municipal Auditorium from 1972-1974 and in Kemper Arena from 1974-1985. The team played its home games in Omaha in the Omaha Civic Auditorium from 1972-1978.

In 1985, the Kings made their move to Sacramento where they played their home games in ARCO Arena until 1988. In 1988, the Kings moved their home games to a new arena, which kept the name ARCO Arena.

In the history of the franchise, the team has won a total of seven division titles. The team's two NBL titles came in 1947 and 1948, while the five NBA division titles came in 1949, 1952, 1979, 2002, and 2003. The Kings won their only NBA conference title in 1951. They also won their only NBA Championship that same year. In 1946, the team won the NBL Championship.

Nine former players for the Sacramento Kings' franchise are currently in the National Basketball Hall of Fame. Those players are Nate Archibald, Al Cervi, Bob Davies, Jerry Lucas, Arnie Risen, Oscar Robertson, Maurice Strokes, Jack Twyman, and Bobby Wanzer.

A total of eight numbers have been retired by the Sacramento Kings franchise. The seven players whose jersey numbers have been retired are Nate Archibald - 1, Mitch Richmond - 2, Bob Davies - 11, Maurice Strokes - 12, Oscar Robertson - 14, Jack Twyman - 27, and Sam Lacey - 44. The number 6 was retired in honor of the Sixth Man, the fans of the Sacramento Kings.

Some other former fan favorites in Sacramento are Spud Webb, Wayman Tisdale, Chris Webber, Vlade Divac, and Peja Stojakovic.

The current Sacramento Kings team is led by captain and point guard Mike Bibby. The team has recently been in the news as a result of always controversial player Ron Artest.
